Walmart Ads in Vogue
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 10:15 AM by neebob
Eight pages in the September issue. How bizarre is that? The ads show eight different women - none of whom closely resemble women I've seen in Walmart - their occupations, their "style profiles," their Walmarts (location), what they bought there (of the clothing they're wearing), and what they "brought from home."

The "martial artist" goes from sunrise surfs to dinner parties with karate in between and changes five times a day - from tomboy to bombshell in ten minutes flat. She brought eelskin cowboy boots from home. (Don't all Walmart shoppers have a pair of those?)

The fundraiser grew up in Argentina in a family of famous dancers, so she has tango in her blood. Dresses conservatively when raising funds for Julliard, but at least once a week hits the Copacabana to kick up her heels and the glam quotient. Apparently there's no Walmart near Julliard, so she tangoes on down to walmart.com.

Trés lame! I'm having more than the usual remorse over having bought this magazine.

1. Methinks that ad campaign won't bring in enough customers
to justify the expense.

3. They are just setting themselves up for ridicule
I'm sure most readers of Vogue had a good laugh over that

4. No doubt
I'm not a regular or even occasional Vogue reader, and I had a good laugh. I bought last month's issue because of Madonna, and this one because of Sarah Jessica Parker - and because I like to look at the clothes. Before that, it had been at least five years since I bought a Vogue. I noticed right away that it's gotten even snootier.

5. New Yorker this week
is almost entirely populated by Target ads. They are however very clever and in usual Target fashion extremely clever. Target, in case you don't know, donates a percentage of profits to arts organizations across the country. By doing an artistic advertising feature like this it's supporting artists as well as getting it's brand out there.
It's the August 22 issue and is well worth buying, especially because of the article about Kinky Friedman and his run for Texas Governor.

6. Those ads are whacked!
Full page ads all over this weeks New Yorker. Not a word on 'em. quite tastefully done, IMO

The WM ads in Vogue must be a response=WM trying to lure in the chic crowd.

good luck

7. As it happens
there's a multi-page spread for Target in this month's Vogue, with Isaac Mizrahi. Something about good design.

I like the New Yorker, too, and I'm looking forward to the Target that's coming to my area.
