As the headline to Jerry Wheeler's Aug. 13 letter says: "Bush's policies are right out of Reagan's playbook." Indeed they are. And as a result Americans are celebrating with far more jobs and greater prosperity than their counterparts in France and Germany.

President Bush's tax cuts have gotten the economy going again: 3.4 percent growth in the second quarter, consistent with America's performance since 2003. Meanwhile, in high-tax France and Germany, unemployment stays around 8-10 percent and growth has been anemic. Just how anemic? A mere one-tenth of one percent in France in the second quarter, six-tenths of one percent in Germany, typical of their performances the past few years.

Mr. Wheeler not only ignores the greater prosperity Americans are enjoying as he sneers at the policies of Presidents Reagan and Bush, he fails to put either of their administrations in context: Reagan was elected when 12 percent inflation was strangling the economy and punishing everyone with higher prices and, in effect, lower paychecks. With interest rates hitting 20 percent, lots of Americans could not afford a new car, or to buy a house.

Steel and autos and construction and related industries laid people off. Businesses generally cut back on investing in more equipment and people. Unemployment hit 10 percent before Reagan took office, the highest since 1960.

5. many economies in Europe aren't growth driven

I forgot where I heard that, but growth is not as important than to sustain or increase prosperity, as their populations are often level, or decreasing. The US still has a fairly high population growth rate, so needs to grow the economy in order to sustain our "prosperity"


edited to add - and, if this moran is comparing our economy in 2005 to 2003 and trumpeting success, he is engaging in the "soft bigotry of low expectations." Job growth under Bush has been anemic, at best, and disastrous at worst. His job numbers are pitiful compared to Clinton. And, under Bush, our wages are not keeping up with the rate of inflation.
