LAMO -- Senate will "hold hearings on gas prices Sept 8th"..what a joke
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 11:17 AM by cthrumatrix
Coming from the same group that:

* removed auto fuel efficiency standards from the latest energy bill

* a group that refused to press auto manf on fuel stds...same as 1985.

* a group that "green lighted" Oil mergers between Chevron/Texaco and Exxon/Mobil resulting in 50% less refinieries than the 1980's.

* zero conservation attention for years

these guys (all of them) deserved to be put on trial for endangering national security

Of course CNN and the MSM will NEVER bring up these facts...these guy sold out America for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

10. I watched the Senate floor speeches
before the energy bill vote. IIRC, Kerry, Wyden and Schumer spoke against, and 29 Dems voted against the bill.
I agree that the bill is a POS, but I would not lump the dissenters in with the rest.
JMHO. Credit (and blame) where it's due.

14. "all for the people" an illusion of another party...don't forget
Dem's were in power before this time...nothing was done...they are both owned IMHO.

3. And the end result will be...
"Yup! Gas is going up alright!" They will then broadcast it to the common folk so they too will know.

4. Of course, just in time to take advantage of the falling autumn prices
Prices always fall in autumn, after the oil companies have milked every drop from the summer vacationers. Just after Labor Day. Oil prices come down, the Republicans say "See, we got tough, and our investigations made the oil companies lower their prices. Gas relief, we'll call it." Then the Repub Congresspersons will take their kickbacks and buy new cars and pools and go on junkets for the oil companies, and we will start saving for the Christmas milking period.

6. And the first order of business should be to hear testimony from
that guy who recently altered his car so that it gets 250 miles per gallon. What do you want to bet that his name is never mentioned?

"green lighted" Oil mergers between Chevron/Texaco and Exxon/Mobil resulting in 50% less refinieries than the 1980's"

It did? How come no one is talking about that when they bitch about refineries. I though there weren't any refineries because liberal tree-huggers wouldn't let them build any :sarcasm:

12. They just announced yesterday
that the Mississippi legislature was holding hearings.

Although some of it will be local, they are looking at the whole issue from supply on down.

Jamie Franks, the chairman of the committee is an intellegent, aggressive, Democrat. I'll keep my eye on it, some interesting things could pop up from this one.

13. Not a bad thing.. Byron Dorgan (D) from North Dakota has a plan..
I heard him on Ed Schultz show yesterday. He has a plan to create a windfall tax on the oil companies that are reaping RECORD profits since they jacked the price of gas. He said that if they put the profits back into refinery development or exploration, they could avoid the tax. But the fact that they are going to pull down 80BILLION in extra profits this year, should be a red flag to all of our elected officials. I don't know if I spelled Dorgan's name right.. but he impressed me with this knowledge of the situation. This gas situation absolutely sours everyone on the elected officials.. even though it's the oil companies that deserve the scorn for screwing us. Perhaps this is all part of that secret energy policy Cheney worked on. Or.. do any of us wonder if the energy bill bush signed has something in it to protect those companies????

16. From Wyden's floor speech
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 12:25 PM by globalvillage
But even so - this bill is still stuffed with a smorgasbord of subsidies for energy industries like oil, coal, nuclear and ethanol. The buffet of subsidies is so generously larded that in many cases it allows second and even third helpings from the buffet table.
Loan guarantees are letting these industries double-dip and even triple-dip on their projects. Projects that would already be subsidized in other provisions of the Energy Bill would also receive loan guarantees under the Incentives Title. They’re already getting tax credits in the Finance Title; that’s dip one. Then they’re getting loans under the Incentives title: that’s dip two. And then come those loan guarantees for dip three.
Those guarantees are some of the largest subsidies in the Senate Energy bill. The Congressional Budget Office estimates they will provide $3.75 billion in loans for the first 5 years. However, after that 5 years, there=s no limit on how many more loan guarantees there may be. The incentives title provides loan guarantees to an unlimited amount of projects for an unlimited amount of time. That’s a blank check for boondoggles that will be cashed at taxpayer expense.
