Anyone remember the mini-series "V" ???
I think it was on Morning Sedition the other day someone mentioned it.

It was made back in the Reagan Era and, even at my young age, I saw parallels between what they portrayed and what I foresaw actually happening. Yes, I was fairly politically aware even as a teenager.

For those of you who don't remember, it was about aliens who came to Earth, ostensibly on a peaceful mission...They apparently looked JUST LIKE US, though their voices were weirdly resonant. As it turned out, they were lizards, and they didn't necessarily have our best interests at heart.

They were experts at propoganda, using the news services to control public perception of what they were doing. They deliberately manufactured a dangerous conspiracy to go after bio-scientists and anyone who questioned the way things were going.

I took it as a warning, even then. And it makes me wish they had've had the foresight to re-make the show/series in time for the 2000 elections...or very soon after.

<sigh>

What could have been...

19. In a faux letterbox format and Warner Bros changed some sound effects.
Can't they leave well enough alone?

2. V has developed a pretty significant cult following.
And it's been reshown a couple times relatively recently - I think on the Sci-Fi Channel.

4. I know...
but a re-showing on sci-fi doesn't have near the same impact as a first-run re-make would have...

I just think the anti-science parallels are kinda funny...for one.

6. Loved it. Recently rented the DVD....
and was surprised that the dialog and acting were corny, and sets and
special effects where cheap and cheesy.

And I still LOVED it. Its political message is first rate.

8. LOL
Yeah, I pretty much feel the same way... I watched it again fairly recently and couldn't believe how bad the production quality looked compared to today's stuff, and, yes, the acting and dialogue were pretty awful, but the political message was dead on just like I remember.

Wasn't there a dedication to Freedom Fighters everywhere? Or was that just in the book?

10. No, it was on the DVD too! In fact....
what struck me was that it was also dedicated to FUTURE freedom fighters.

I thought: Wow. I guess they were anticipating Bushco!

I'm not even sure what brought it to mind this morning...but I thought it a fairly fitting commentary on our time.

16. You got me thinking.....
about another all-time favorite Science Fiction film of mine: The Day the
Earth Stood Still. It too has corny production values (really corny! The
movie was made in the 1950s), but has a wonderful message. And
it gets me every time the way Michael Rennie extends his hand
towards Patricia Neal at the end.

7. Based on Sinclair Lewis's book about fascists taking over America
It Can't Happen Here. http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/0301001h.html

Hollywood was too chicken to be realistic to the book. No internal threat by fascists like Bush. No, they have to be turned into aliens.
Read the book. It was so much better than "V." And I liked "V."

9. Sometimes you need greater separation
for the symbolism to strike deep into the observer. If it's too true-to-life people might find it too disturbing to handle...but separate it with a sci-fi gimmick and it might resonate better. It's not as personally threatening.

Or so I believe...though I have to admit I'm a little prejudiced in this department...LOL

12. I just re-read the book. It was written for our times!

Amazing how many of the events paralleled ours. Including the establishment of an Underground of subversives! Just like us!

11. The new Battlestar Gallactica........
has some interesting plot lines. Theocratic overtones versus
strict military doctrine.

20. I Like the New BSG
A lot of the original fans are not happy with the new version, but I think it is a lot better. You can see a lot of parallels with the world we live in today in the new version. It is very well done. Season 1 is out on DVD at Best Buy exclusively, but you might want to wait a few weeks because a better S1 set is coming out & will be available everywhere. This version has more extras.

22. It IS a lot better...
And I was a fan of the original series. This is darker, grittier, and more relevant than the original ever HOPED to be.

15. What about "They Live"
Quite similar, subliminal messages in advebrtising only revealed by special ray-bans ar whatever. That was a good movie. I love it at the end when their illusion scheme is busted and some guy humping what he thought was a beautiful women is really some nasty alien.
