24. The patriotic thing to do is stand up against the misuse of government
"Patriotism," the mayor said, "demands that people speak out when we see our government officials acting in such anti-democratic and deceitful ways to the people of our country."

He also said: "I don't understand people simply blindly going along with the sort of deceit and utter cruelty of this administration. It's not just we have the right to speak out, but we have the obligation to speak out when we see misconduct on the part of the government. The most patriotic thing we can do is stand up against the misuse of governmental power."

Fits Bush to a "T"

14. Think back to the Civil War or even the Revolutionary War
or, hell, the Declaration of Independence. In every case, a government was interferring the with the "pursuit of happiness." The South felt so strongly they went to war over it - a lost cause no less. The colonies went to war over being taxed without representation - a winning cause in that case. I find it absolutely mindboggling that the so called "patriotic" type we find prominently in the south and "red" states have a problem with a simple expression of protest when historically they are the ones more than eager to start a war over something they don't like.

From the chairman of the Utah Republican Party:
"I'm disappointed he would do this and use his office to promote his political views, which do not involve the city directly."

As if a war, the economy, senior issues, health care, gay rights, social security, nuclear issues and the environment *don't* affect cities.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your courageous call to the thoughtful people of Salt Lake City to tell our lousy excuse for a president that his administration is WRONG on so many counts. I turn out for every rally possible here in Milwaukee and I take my three teenage daughters with me. Something has to get through to that man so he can understand that he is squandering the future of my country!

My mother visits Salt Lake every year to add to her geneology studies. When she travels in October I will be sending some money along to spend in your fine city.

Live strong and never surrender,
In peace

It's not like you think. The SLC Tribune regularly publishes anti-Bush letters.

This is a good lesson to progressives and Democrats...stop ignoring and writing off big chunks of America just because either you've never been there, and/or assume that everyone there disagrees with you.

Utah, Wyoming, Montana, and even Idaho have many folks who think like we do.

Speaking of Idaho, here's a link to a story about how their Democrats are organizing and getting back in the game:

Bush is a crook, he is a disaster, a disgrace. Well said, backed with facts.

Supporters of Bush flip out, acting as if they had the corner on patriotism.

(Although, I prefer not to use the term patriotism - it is all about fairness and truth).

48. #1 * is a liar! tell me what he hasn't lied about?
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 02:53 PM by flyarm
we have to say lie as many times as possible...

he lied about war, he covered up so much about 9/11, he lied about elections, he lied about Saddam Hussein, he lied about Jessica Lynch, he lied about Pat Tillman, he has lied about the economy, he has lied about social security..

these neo cons are systematically destroying the working class, and our nation from the bottom up..just when will Americans say "NO" with a strong voice..
other than the black caucus, the dems in congress sit silently..while our country is being raped...
they are making our middle class a third world country...

think about it..if people are working and making min. wage..at $5.00+
and they are paying $3.00 for gas..what are they actually making..

the vets have been royally screwed and yet * will go to the vfw convention and what will they do..cheer the man who is screwing them??

i keep thinking of that song....

'WHEN WILL WE EVER LEARN? WHEN WILL WE EVVVVER LEARN?"

THE VFW VETS HAVE AN OBLIGATION TO THE YOUNG VETS WHO ARE BEING CREATED NOW..

* has lied us to war..he has put young lives at risk for his lies and deceit...he has turned his back on the vets..

so when he walks into the room with the vets..the greatest thing the vets could do ...is turn their backs to him!

If the vets truely believe that no soldier should be sent to war unless there are "no other options, and last resort" then they have an obligation to turn their backs on the president..

they have an obligation to stand for the constitution and article 1 section 10..

they have an obligation to those who come behind them to stand for the values of our nation, which is to stand for the geneva conventions.

they have an obligation to stand for the truth..and never let a soldier be used for propaganda..like Jessica Lynch and the death of Pat Tillman were used..

Just tell me when will the vets of this nation stand up for what is right instead of false patriotism??

who has the right more tnan a vet??

but who has the greater obligation than a vet to protect our active soldiers who can only follow orders, The Vet Must Stand Up for what is right against the government towards our active armed forces.

this false patriotism is going to kill this nation and the very democracy they fought for!

remember Goring said...at his trial in Nuremberg..

But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

how long will the vets of this country be silent??

There is nothing 'NOBLE' about a nation being lied into a war!

There is nothing noble about vets supporting a war based on nothing but lies!

there is nothing noble about sitting back with a flag pin in ones lapel and a vfw pin on and turning their eyes way from the lies that is getting our soldiers killed daily, and innocent human lives being snuffed out because ones government lied to war!

WW11 vets were not noble when they supported Vietnam, they were not noble when they did nothing to find out the truth about Vietnam, and i do not say that lightly as my father was one who sat silently and supported Vietnam because he thought that was the patriotic thing to do...
he admitted he was wrong shortly before his death..he cried and a painful cry...and said he should have spoken up and helped stop the vietnam war...

it was too late then though..the black wall was already being built in Washington...

stand up vets..this president uses you, for the false patriotism that is killing innocent lives, and will lead us into syria and iran, and more and more deaths..and possibly WW3!

* is not a noble man, this administration that uses you, are not noble men...

My husband said the other day...what happened to man placing his hand on the bible and saying , 'THE TRUTH , THE WHOLE TRUTH , AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH....

we have lost something so vital to our democracy..and that is truth!

I fear the legacy we leave our children will be a disgrace.

fly

29. Mayor is probably a non-partisan position but he is pretty liberal
see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rocky_Anderson

Ross C. "Rocky" Anderson (born 1951) is the current mayor of Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born in Logan, Utah.

He received a bachelor's degree in science from the University of Utah and a law degree from George Washington University. Anderson spent many years as a lawyer in Salt Lake City, specializing in civil litigation. He was president of the local ACLU chapter, and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1996, but received 55% of Salt Lake City's vote in that race. <1>

He took office as mayor of Salt Lake in 2000 and was re-elected in 2003.

He has a strong environmental agenda; under his mayorship, the city has purchased wind power, has increased recycling, and is moving forward on light rail and commuter rail projects and converting its fleet of city vehicles to alternative fuels. He is an ardent opponent of tobacco use and has supported legislative measures limiting smoking. Ironically, he has been viewed as one of the state's most outspoken supporters of alcohol use. He opposes English-only legislation, supports GLBT rights, has launched living wage initiatives, a notable agenda in the state that in the 2004 presidential election gave George W. Bush his greatest percentage of the vote of any state in the Union. <2>

I think the last Republican mayor was Jake Garn, way before my time. There is a solid majority, about 55%, of devout Democrats that keep Salt Lake City proper as close to sane as can be expected in Utah. But step out side the city limits and your in red up to your neck.

around the country that switched from Bush (2000) to Kerry (2004). Don't you folks realize that Bush wasn't elected? I don't even think Utah voted for him. I really don't. I think that the most vote stealing via Bushite electronic voting machine companies and their secret, proprietary programming code occurred against REPUBLICANS who had NOT voted for Bush.

Go, Salt Lake!

---------

(...not that we needed their votes. We actually didn't. The Dems blew the Repubs away in new voter registration in 2004, nearly 60/40! The great majority of new voters voted for Kerry. The great majority of independent voters voted for Kerry. The great majority of former Nader voters voted for Kerry. And the Gore 2000 voters--who actually defeated Bush in 2000--were the ones who got all their non-voting family members, friends and co-workers to vote THIS TIME, because it was "the most important election in our history" (highly motivated.) Who else is there? Bush 2000 voters...and? Karl Rove's "invisible" get-out-the-vote campaign? Har, har. The corporate news monopoly TV networks, acting in concert, sold us an ILLUSION on election night, when they "adjusted' their own exit polls (Kerry won) to "fit" the "official result" coming from Diebold, ES&S and Sequoia's secret, proprietary electronic formulae (Bush won). And Der Karl invented a reason after the fact (and probably devised it before the fact, knowing they were going to "win"). Invisible Republicans. But not only did they use phantom votes--they also used actual votes and flipped them over. That's what they did. I think Kerry won by a landslide, and possibly won almost every state in the union, even Utah.)

40. Wonderful example of the “All politics is local” idea
The Mayor sees the bigger picture and connects the community with the nation and the world. What the Bush administration does isn't abstract, such as the "war on terror;" rather, Bush's actions and policies come home to SLC residents in the form of dead daughters and sons, a higher cost of living, a polluted environment, reduced liberty and human rights, and on and on. Rocky makes me proud of my country.

43. Niiiiiiice. Good comeback to the Veteran. Why oh, why
do so many veterans (actually, I could just say Americans in general) fail to see the appalling irony in calling someone with an opposing viewpoint unpatriotic for expressing said view. They were 'fighting to make us free', but apparently that didn't include freedom of speech and freedom to assemble peacably. My dad was a vet. He doesn't get this either. Hypocrisy and irony are the mating calls of the Right. *shaking head*

51. You guys, he's asking for help, he's reminding us theyr'e the
reddest of the red states. With all that hate bottled up in one 'small' area he's calling for help from:

"There should be a collaboration of health-care-provision advocates, seniors, the community, anti-Patriot Act advocates and other civil libertarians, anti-war folks, pro-Social Security advocates, environmental advocates, anti-nuclear-testing advocates, and anti-nuclear-waste-shipment-and-storage advocates," the mayor wrote in the e-mail.

Give him the back-up he needs!!!

57. I Used to Live By SLC
I was very surprised to find out that SLC is no longer just full of Mormons. Even Roseanne grew up there, & she is Jewish. I think this is why they can elect a mayor who despises Bush.

60. What blows my mind is what Mike Parkin
(senior vice commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars) said: "It makes
the mayor look very, very unpatriotic. It makes him look despicable."

Where the HELL does it say we can't disagree with "the prez"??
Where the HELL does it say that's unpatriotic???
That's another BS talking point the neocons have rammed through.

They're so full of CRAP it's unbelievable

:grr: :banghead: :mad::puke:

But I'm delighted the major is so cool!!

63. I loved to hate this quote from the repukes in SLC...

"It's not the worst thing that can happen to remind the people of Utah the kind of things Democrats nationally stand for."

That's right sweetheart! Remind them that Democrats stand for standing up to the injustice and criminal anti-american behavior of these thugs! I mean just what, exactly, does a repuke administration have to do wrong before the sheeple wake up, stand up and defend this nation from total destruction?! Lying about WMDs, starting an illegal war of aggression, underfunding the veterans admin., destroying the education, health and social networks, destroying the environnment, handing money back to the wealthy and corporations while ignoring the crumbling economy...
I mean what does it take to get thru their koolaid haze? It's beyond anything I ever dreamed of!

77. This is great!!!
This is the best part: <"Patriotism," the mayor said, "demands that people speak out when we see our government officials acting in such anti-democratic and deceitful ways to the people of our country."
He also said: "I don't understand people simply blindly going along with the sort of deceit and utter cruelty of this administration. It's not just we have the right to speak out, but we have the obligation to speak out when we see misconduct on the part of the government. The most patriotic thing we can do is stand up against the misuse of governmental power." >

83. What a great big, outta-the-blue, nice, warm, fuzzy surprise!
One that I can really use right now.

BTW.....as regards the Blue within Red phenomenon, I am reminded of my trip to Tulsa, Oklahoma in about 1995. I was born in Minnesota but aside from my mother, the rest of her fam. is in OK (Dad's side is in a small town in Kansas, just 4 miles from the OK border).

Apparently intimidated by my Minnesota-ness, I was spontaneously informed no less than 3 times by 3 different relatives of 3 different ages that "ya know, we HATE that Newt Gingrich fella here". I was more than a littl surprised - but only momentarily. I soon connected this unexpected Gingrich-hating with my memories of visiting Tulsa all through my life and how many of the residents regarded Oral Roberts and his "university" with disdain or, at best, as something as silly as Sun Ra's wardrobe that, none the less, generated some needed economic activity.

I am out of touch now, but there must still be some of that pure prairie skepticism alive in that very Red state. In all of the Red states. It's just not American to march in lock-step over precipices. I was sure of that until recently.
