Seriously. Are men who drive Hummers compensating for something?
Edited on Sat Aug-20-05 02:08 PM by Cyrano
This is not meant as a salacious posting, but a serious question.

Replies to a few of my recent posts, as well as many others I've read, mostly from female DUers, suggest that men who own Hummers ... how do I put this politely: Don't measure up?

I really don't know whether a lot of you women are kidding or not. And I have no idea whether or not men who own big cars and large guns are compensating for ... shortcomings. Is this myth, fact or what?

But I'd really like to hear from female DUers on this. Is this just bullshit, or are you serious?

(And as an aside to moderators, this is not a sexual posting or flame bait. It's a serious question as to things I've seen posted on DU time and time again.)

1. Think trucks with BIG tires.
Same rule applies. The bigger the tires, the smaller the....um....assets.

More women than men and the women all look alike. It's kind of unnerving. I did see one Hummer with a 'No Hummers' bumper sticker on it, though. The driver is either confused or doesn't know it's there. :shrug:

8. If you are serious
I would say like any population there is bound to be some variation. I am sure some of them actually like big toys and even occasionally may need a vehicle like that (I admit with the conditions of the roads I drive that when I first heard of them they sounded good)

It may not be the size of the "equipment" that is the problem with many of them but the size of their self-esteem. On the other hand the stereotype is so well known now, that if I was a guy with a "deficiency" I think I would be embarrased to drive a "compensator" type vehicle - I'd probably drive a ford focus hahahahha

9. One fellow I know
drives a bright yellow Hummer. He's a realtor, and got one when they just came out. I think he got it to attract attention to his business.

I think that some people drive Hummers because they think the vehicles make them look macho. My husband, who is a mechanic, knows that all the civilian Hummers are are Broncos (or something else like that) with a different cover. HE wonders about deficiencies in the cranium, not elsewhere. I agree with his opinion.

Was it from the steriods? Guess the size has little to do with making children however.

12. Yes, they are. Seriously. Men whose male identity is compromised...
Doubt a man’s masculinity and he’ll get macho
Men whose male identity is compromised will overcompensate, study finds

Updated: 6:38 p.m. ET Aug. 11, 2005

NEW YORK - Tell a man that he’s not “man enough” and he may exhibit extremely macho behavior to compensate, new study findings suggest.

<snip>

Preference for SUVs increased
<snip>

Men whose masculinity was threatened — who were told that their initial survey responses were more feminine than masculine — tended to overcompensate for it in the second survey by expressing more homophobia, a higher level of support for the Iraq war and a greater interest in buying an SUV as opposed to other types of vehicles, Willer reports. These men also reported more feelings of shame, guilt, upset and hostility than did those whose masculinity was not threatened.

<snip>

Women apparently didn’t care about their identity rating. Those who were told that their survey responses were more masculine than feminine did not show any feminine overcompensation, Willer said.

“Results of the study offer strong support for the masculine overcompensation thesis,” according to Willer’s report. He is expected to present his findings early next week during the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

are people taking that criminal tax break that small business owners take. I guess that what they saved in taxes...they can afford the gas. Besides being environmentally ridiculous...they are UGLY!!!

23. We had a Expedition rental
and it sure made LeftyDad *drive* like a dick. :eyes: Really it was very hard to tell how fast we were going and really easy to count on people to get out of the way when we wanted to pass or change lanes.

IF the gas didn't kill our budget, the tickets and insurance would. I'm glad we have a smaller car. :)

with those people

my fear is that as gas prices keep going up that those monster trucks , SUVs and such are going to flood the Used Car Lots and become the "poor peoples" vehicles of tomorrow

24. Already happening
Check any of the freestanding used car lots (the ones that do thier own financing generally cater to the lower middle class and working poor) and see what they have in inventory, more than likely they'll have more SUVs than cars. A lady I know needed a vehicle with three rows of seating (because she has four kids) and couldn't get finaced for a van like she wanted, but had no trouble getting an SUV (a Durango, which she hates.)

30. First Hummer I ever saw
Was driven by on of the VPs of a company I worked for. They made nutritional supplements and he was in charge of the body building products (ephedra). He was very, very short. With a high, nasal voice. Good looking, thanks to body building and lots of plastic surgery and extreme dentistry. His hair was professionally highlighted. He was married, and the word around the gyms was that he was gay. When I saw him climb down out of the Hummer - this was a real one. They weren't making the Hummer Lite things yet - I almost split a gut. It was the funniest thing I'd ever seen. Especially knowing how much he didn't need a vehicle like that.

I think they're just self-centered a-holes.

I saw one the other with environmental plates on it. The few extra bucks that go toward environmental causes from bying these plates don't offset the damage they do to the environment. :eyes:
