We usually look at California as a reliable blue state with all it electorate votes.

But in reality, only the coastal metropolitans of San Francisco and Los Angeles are. Almost like (big) islands of blue.

The rest of California is definitely red.

This is true across the country. The densely populated areas are blue while the sparsely ones are red. This is why the mountain and southwestern states are Bush and Cheney countries. Even though I am sure that the core of their large metropolitan areas are blue, but not enough to counter balance the state. In CA, NY and IL - it is.

Houston the city has elected a woman mayor, a black mayor, has had a woman police chief, a black police chief, and has elected an out lesbian to city-wide office 4 consecutive times.

I think if you're looking for really conservative -- look for big military bases. Like Pensacola.

This makes it difficult to answer your question. If you look at the burbs, I think you could make a case for Detroit; but if you look at the city, home of John Conyers, then you are talking about something else.

If Metro Detroit is so conservative, how did John Kerry win in Oakland county and western Wayne, outside of Detroit?
Most of the inner suburbs are majority Democratic. Ferndale, Oak Park, Southfield,Huntington Woods, etc. are very liberal.
Sandy Levin and John Dingell get reelected in the burbs by big margins every two years.

the St. Charles/West Country area of St. Louis is red (home the Moran)

Overland Park KS, on the list of most conservative cities, is a burb of Kansas City, MO, on the liberal list

One problem: What defines the metro area? In Dallas, for example, is it the burbs in the immediate area or do you include Fort Worth and its suburban communities? I mean. like Baltimore and D.C. it's all one big conglomeration of city, but they are distinct cities.

One thing about Texas that people don't think about; it's a huge state. Which means that it has more rural areas than other states, and the rural areas tend to be more conservative.

The city went 81% Kerry, the metropolitan area went 57% Kerry, if I remember correctly. Listed as 20th most liberal city on above post. KC similar, at least on the Missouri side.

Like everywhere else, the farther from the inner-city, the more republican.
