I was having dinner and there was this very light tapping on my door. It turns out to be the repuke cadidate for town supervisor, and guess what? He wants my vote!

First of all, if I were him, I would have approached the door carefully. There is an Impeach Bush sign in my window, and my car has plenty of anti-bush stickers on it to indicate where I stand on this whole nasty mess.

I ask him if he supports the pResident. His answer? Well, do we really need to ask? I told him I was a registered dem and would not be allowed to vote in the upcoming primary on 9/15, but still, he wanted to talk. :wtf:

I was trying so hard to just be as civil as I could without screaming that I would rather swallow razor blades than be standing in my own doorway forced to engage with him. Should I have just told him to go to hell, or try to coexist peacefully in my very RED town in a BLUE state.

My 6 year old daughter has been gearing up for the march in Washington and is so excited about carring her huge flag and chanting "Hey Hey, Ho Ho, President Bush has got to go", but I keep trying to tell her that we will encounter resistance. At the vigil on Wednesday night we ran into the freeper who accosted us in the grocery parking lot and she was so confused by his tirade about how we hate america, etc. She pointed out that she loves her flag.

Because if he would have said to me I'd like to talk then I would have said "Sit down my son .. cause its going to be a long night!" on the other hand maybe it would have been a good opportunity to call in the deprogramming specialists so the poor guy has a chance at a normal life.

23. We have been having some major zoning issues in our town

and he wanted to know how I felt about them. For example, I live in a 25 year old development which has always been touted as a "nature" preserve. It was built within a pine forest, and there are many hiking trails, etc. Recently, the town approved, much to my dismay, the construction of a "tech park", which promised 5-10k new jobs, etc. right in the middle of the huge open space within the development. There are over 800 homes in the forest, and while you may feel like you are living cheek by jowl with your neightbors, you have a forest in your backyard and you can't see much but that. In addition, there is the question of a 350 acre horse farm that the town wants to buy to build more houses.

He is, of course, on the "let's build more" bandwagon. The town supervisor is the leader of the council which eventually makes all of these decisions.

It takes a while to figure out how to go door-to-door effectively.

I made lots of similar dumb mistakes when I was first campaigning last year. It was good you were civil to him. Perhaps you should have very politely told him you'll be voting for his opponent. But no candidate deserves overt rudeness. It's astonishing what people will say to a candidate. Oh, the stories I could tell.

I have a ferocious cold, my dinner was getting cold (yes, I know I am whining). I gave it a quick glance, but all I had to see was his platform on "preserving open spaces" to know what a freaking liar he was, because he is already on the town council, and voted to put in a huge tech park in the middle of my neighborhood, eliminating acres of forest and hiking trails. In addition, he voted for the acquisition of a 350 acre horse farm to build more houses. How is this preserving open spaces? My cat is now mauling the lit.

As a campaign consultant, I always have the candidate stick to the " low hanging fruit " until they've all been personally spoken to, and that's a near impossibility in a larger city or district.
But.....I also encourage them to engage the opposition constituents with respect and politeness, especially when there may be a chance to persuade.
The original poster is to be commended for his/her civility. Persuasion works both ways.
