I just counted 673 pennies into a jar before I ran out. April 9, 2004
If my math is right, I just counted a penny for each USA soldier killed in Iraq from March 21, 2003 to April 9, 2004. I need 1190 more to get to the official count as of right now on http://icasualties.org/oif/

It was a moving experience, counting lives.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty one, twenty two, twenty three, twenty four, twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven, twenty eight, twenty nine, thirty, thirty one, thirty two, thirty three, thirty four, thirty five, thirty six, thirty seven, thirty eight, thirty nine, forty, forty one forty two, forty three, forty four, forty five, forty six, forty seven, forty eight, forty nine, fifty, fifty one, fifty two, fifty three, fifty four, fifty five, fifty six, fifty seven, fifty eight, fifty nine, sixty, sixty one, sixty two, sixty three, sixty four, sixty five, sixty six, sixty seven, sixty eight, sixty nine, seventy, seventy one, seventy two, seventy three, seventy four, seventy five, seventy six, seventy seven, seventy eight, seventy nine, eighty, eighty one, eighty two, eighty three, eighty four, eighty five, eighty six, eighty seven, eighty eight, eighty nine, ninety, ninety one, ninety two, ninety three, ninety four, ninety five, ninety six, ninety seven, ninety eight, ninety nine, one hundred, repeat 5 more times plus 73 to get to....six hundred seventy three.

I need to go get another $11.90 worth of pennies to make it to now.

That's a great idea for a desktop/cubicle silent statement.
maybe with a flag on the outside of the jar. Thanks for the idea.

6. I got the idea on DU earlier this week. Use beans, marbles, pennies
I started just counting, and it struck me around 60 that each of these was someone's child. It became solemn then and each time I got to another 100 I put a big marker to the side to keep my place and started again. And again. I feel like buying the remainder as rolls of pennies so I don't have to count each.

1. You'll need a few more to make it to the moment you finish!
By the time you count out 1,190...the number will be higher.

11. a quart jar of pennies is $18.00, approximately.
if that helps any in determining volume.

We had a quart jar of pennies and when we rolled and counted them we had $18 to spend at the Evansville Fall Festival (it was a poor year)

12. Thanks, now I know how big of a jar to use.
A little over a quart of pennies, 1/soldier, has been killed in Iraq. Makes a handy reference at parties or guessing games.

5. I would have done that in WWII if I had thought of it----with those funny
non copper pennies that we had during the war.

Seriously,what's the point?

7. I am putting it out at work with an anti-war poster and explanation
Maybe "guess how many pennies", turn the card over for the number and the explanation.

9. We're working on a marble pyramid
Up to 900 marbles/fallen so far. It is heartbreaking.

My daughter made a sign to put up by her school, "759 American young people go to school here. More than double that have given their lives in the Iraq war."
