Expect a lot more fluff stories coming out of Iraq soon
It has been a longstanding gripe of the right that the MSM never reports the good stories that are coming out of Iraq. With the tide of public opinion turning against this war though, those on the right are doing more than just griping these days. There is an organized letter-writing campaign right now directed at the MSM, urging them to offer more "balance" in their coverage of Iraq. Given the relative strength of the RW and the left's ignoring of their campaign, I believe that they will succeed. No matter that Iraq is widely believed to be on the verge of a civil war; the MSM will still scramble to find some feel-good stories to feed this valued target audience.

When was the last time we at DU had a good old-fashioned media blitz? Seems like we have been on cruise control for a little while since the DSM push. We wrote some LTTE's about Karl Rove, but since then I don't really remember any media actions.

My point is not to disparage anyone's efforts here. Rather, I would like to ask whether you also think that we need to remind the MSM to not cave in to partisan hacks on this. Perhaps we could even make it a DU activist corps action? What do y'all think?

1. They can push all they want...
if the reporters can't leave the Green Zone they can't even offer images to SHOW all the great things being done. And if reporters are killed by being "embedded" with troops who are under heavy fire, it's going to make the media MORE reluctant to put its reporters in harm's way to further a lie.

Balanced my ass. "This wonderful school they're building over here just outside the green zone--" BOOM!

Uh-huh...yeah, that'll fly.

2. Didn't someone at CNN get fired for writing about that?
Was that because it was untrue or for another reason>

I agree that it will be difficult to paint Iraq in a rosy light anytime soon, but I don't put much faith in the MSM to stay principled. They have caved in to idiots and deceivers too many times, and the right is very desperate these days. I fully expect some big last hurrah on this

8. Oh, I don't have a lot of faith in them either...
but they're NOT going to have a lot of footage to show... and Americans are affected by imagery, not some yanker talking about something.

Unless they send the soldiers out to collect footage (and that's a risky proposition in itself) they're going to find their lack of ethics conflicting with their ability to avoid collecting bullet holes or damage from IEDs.

3. Expect a lot more unsourced, chain emails from your Repub buddies,
documenting heartwarming tales of Iraq, emailed from Sgt. (named removed).

In addition to the ones that have been circulating for years.

6. Mine seem to have stopped.
:)

What, no more gloating about taking all branches of the government?

5. But... But... We're building schools, and water and stuff.
Why is it that when I hear of the "good things", it's ALWAYS that schools are being built?

Does each Iraqi child need his or her own school?

7. I agree with Mythsaje, it will not happen
The media's motto is "if it bleeds, it leads." A majority of people, unfortunately, love their violence and they will not read these stories and the media knows it.

9. It feels strange to be rooting for more coverage of bloodshed
I guess it's better than having all that suffering covered up though. Let's just hope that the remaining third of Americans wake up soon and take their country back from these crooks and war profiteers.

10. The MSM is undermining any shred of trust, because the truth,
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 11:16 AM by Hubert Flottz
is starting to come out of the woodwork. People are starting to look at FOX like it was the Sunday Funny Papers now! The people who follow blindly on behind Bushco now and continue to deceive are cutting their own throats IMHO.

Some hard core GOPers that I know, who believed everything they saw on FOX a year ago, are tuning them out now. I look for that trend to continue to gain momentum, as more and more families like Cindy's, step up to the plate. The Americans like Cindy who have lost the most, deserve our undying respect and gratitude. I wish our soldiers could come home, TODAY.
