On CNN now - Iraqi spokesman saying women have nothing to worry

about. When they get married, they get to pick if they want Islam or regular laws to run their lives. Seems the Afghanistan constitution has something like this. I just realized I hadn't really heard anything about that one. Lots of about how things are going to be great.

8. i could never understand the reasoning behind blaming the

woman for getting raped. I watched a movie where a girl was put in a home as punishment for being raped. The movie was "the magdaline sisters" and apparently this was catholic-doctrine inspired punishment. :shrug:

i just couldn't understand what type of mental acrobatics one must do to think the woman should be held accountable .

13. That's the point of women wearing the clothes they do in the ME.

So they won't tempt all those righteous men. My attitude is, if the men have the problem, let them have the solution. Put blinders on them so they won't look.

Same deal with mini-skirts in this country. Or other "risque" clothing women wear. That she's just asking for "it".

The Magdalene Sisters, Scottish director Peter Mullan's exposé of laundries where about 30,000 "wayward" young Irish women were systematically abused, has won awards, condemnation and even an apology.

"This is a film that points the finger at people within the Catholic Church who abused their authority," says Mullan.

Fathers could condemn their daughters to the laundries as virtual slaves if they flirted, had a baby out of wedlock or were raped. After years of psychological, physical and sexual abuse, the last Magdalene Asylum in Ireland closed in 1996.

"This isn't just about the Catholic faith. It's about all forms of religious oppression," says Mullan. "I wanted to universalize what happened to those women and draw a connection to other repressive regimes."

correctly. A good movie, sometimes hard to watch..

Sorry I don't have his name. But while discussing the constitution writing in Iraq, he said that an Iraq that resembles America in the early 1990's would be a good thing. Then he said this little lovely:


"Women's social rights are not crucial for the evolution of democracy"



Tell me. Is it a democracy if half of the population are not full citizens??????????? :grr:

If one were to use the US as a model for "evolving" democracy, it would prove to be a failure. Our electoral process has been so corupted that it appears that our democracy has failed long before all of our citizens have gained full citizenship.
