1965 - 75 = 10 years
1975 - 85 = 20 years
1985 - 95 = 30 years
1995 - 05 = 40 years

20 plus 40 = 60 years

Still pretty damn old.

139. Oh take that back mhr ...
When you're 60 y.o. then you will re-define *OLD* as 65. ;)

I'm a year younger than Cindy (I believe it was reported that she is 48 y.o.). Therefore, she was approximately 18 y.o. when the Vietnam war was wrapping up in 1975.

I doubt that barely being of legal age, Cindy made the "hippie rounds".

As such, IMO the term "old hippies" a lame argument. :-)

192. They use the word hippie like an insult - just as they do liberal.
Hippies = people with a preference for peace, love and understanding. I would be happy to be considered one!
But can we leave off the aging part? I am still in denial about that.

I think people who saw Vietnam for what it was, called it such and as it turns out were right. People with a concern for social justice, the environment and the liberation of women.

We were, are, have, want and represent everything that the neocons and fundies wish they could have, but never will....happiness, love, peace, freedom, good sex, and a basic belief in justice for all.

I think that someday "aging neocon" or "aging chickenhawk" will be the REAL insult!!!!

145. I was pro war in the 60's and always respected the Hippies.
Nixon and the crew did a great job smearing them. The first Hippies were bright, thoughtful, considerate and charming. Thinking of Goldie Hawn here. Later alot of homeless kids gravitated to areas where Hippies were because they were treated kindly and welcomed. When the drugs hit big time that was the end.

We won't discuss who helped bring in the drugs but let's just say the name J. Edgar Hoover should be taken off any public buildings because he was happy to look away and let thousands be destroyed. Well the winners got to write the history one more time.

all young 'uns younger than probably consider me an "aging hippie" when I wear a Woodstock t-shirt or something similar which I'm doing more of these days. I look at reviving the spirit of the 60's as my duty! One thing I remember from then, was even with all of the problems with drugs, etc. there still was an underlying message that was communicated of hope and to work towards peace and better times. We need to do better at rekindling that sort of spirit in today's youth. We face bigger challenges today, with more barriers in front of everyone, but we still need to retain and be strong around our hope for the future in the face of these neocons who would like to turn this into a fascist state. A lot of great stuff from this newer generation now too, but we need to do more and bind together more. Cindy's doing a great job of helping us all move together in that respect. No more of the "don't trust anyone over 30" mantra either.

60. Well people are who they are.
I have to admit that it felt really really good in Camp Casey and at the Crawford Peace house and there were some old hippies there. There were also young people, very old people, crippled people, freaky people and very ordinary people. Some of us there are most assuredly old hippie freaks but you would never know it by looking at us now.

Actually what I would call the group there would be society with a good bit of pissed off added in.

112. Gotta love it!
I love all the photo's and video's I've seen. It just warms your heart. "Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called sons of God." :) I always remember that when I get pissed off. Lately that verse has been helping me out a lot to stay grounded and to know that God will have his revenge as in Proverbs 19: 9 < A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who pours out lies will perish.> So since George Bush and all of these people have poured out so many lies the Lord will have His revenge. :)

And according to the corporate media who doesn't have any aging hippies on to counter their so called charges :hippie:

17. A proud aging Hippie here
and I am 53 years old and proud to say I marched against the involvement in the war in Viet Nam. I lost friends in that war. I became a teacher and also did a lot of volunteering for social welfare organizations in my Hippie days. Being a "hippie" was more than being about drugs.

I guess it is going to take us "aging hippies" to show the way again.

Perhaps the comment was meant as an insult, but I don't take it that way.

24. they use hippie as a code word for communist, cause that doesn't
do the trick any more, and they CAN'T call them terrorists, yet.

some of the worst ones are calling them traitors, and that'll be catching on, most likely, as more media hoes go down there to get clips of the trogs calling the protestors traitors and worse

that's how they'll get away with the smearjob

96. same here, comrade sister
it's all they do: lie, label, project, then lie some more

then, lie some more

this quote flies around here every so often, but it bears repeating, just to put what these fascist thugs are doing into its proper context:

"All this was inspired by the principle - which is quite true in itself - that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods.

It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.

Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation.

For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. These people know only too well how to use falsehood for the basest purposes. ... "

guess who. too easy, I know, but it's just SO redolent of the techniques they've been using since Reagan. Mike Deaver, meet Edward Bernays; pass what you've read on down to Lee Attwater, then to Karl Rove, then let it trickle down to little PISSants like Duncan Hunter, and sleazeball 'reporters' like Mike Allen, who used this on CBS Face the Nation earlier today

hope you feel good about what you've done

course.....and it was Santayana, I think who said that
the Bushnocchio ones are more satisfying, but that's just today.

and AFAIC, the best Nixon cartoons were done by Ralph Steadman, when he was illustrating for the departed Hunter Thompson.

did you hear about his 150 blowout yesterday, at Owl Creek Farm?

if you have time, you should go back and read some of his Nixon era stuff. his Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail was as good a political journal as I've ever read, and I've read a whole LOT of them. He was the ONLY journalist who predicted, quite a bit in advance, that McGovern had the nomination sewn up, while the rest of the herd was convinced it was all Muskie. won't go into detail, but Thompson actually did on the ground reporting, unlike they do today (and most did back then), and TALKED to those who were actually the movers and shakers in the revised nominating process.

makes me very sad to think his voice is stilled

sigh

not Nixon, but this makes me LOL whenever I see it

These Hippies would be the same ones that were determined to protest a president that went down in disgrace. The new talking points are that the grass roots peace movement is just 'a bunch of old hippies' and the bush thing has already met with Cindy.

I'm damn glad to see that some of us have not forgotten who we are and where we came from. I remember in the late 60's meeting some of the anarchists and others from the 30's who were out on the streets with us, lending their wisdom and insight to our naive strength. Now its our turn to pass the torch.

Never forget the dream.

Oh and most of us are in our 50's and early 60's.

Oh yeah, one more note to Duncan Hunter....

Many of my generation stared down police with billy clubs and teargas. Some even stared down National Guard troops. You think they, (or we) are going to be intimidated by your childish name-calling?

I think that people owe him an apology.

Whether or not you think there should be "dress codes," (I personally don't think there should be, but if I'm truly concerned about broadening the message, and stopping the war -- I sure as fuck wouldn't wear a Grateful Dead T-shirt and a Cat-in-the-Hat top hat to a serious protest), I think he was just trying to ward off exactly this: the media calling the protesters "aging hippies."

Of course, we know the media is being unfair -- but, if you don't bring a flaming turd on a stick to a rally, no one can get film of you bringing a flaming turd to a rally. Ex-hippie-looking people, on the other hand, are readily available for photos at most protests -- right along with the wankers with the hammer & sickle on their backpacks.

131. So, I shouldn't go to a protest if I won't cut my hair?
Let's be clear on this.

Bottom line is, the media will find a way to marginalize the things they don't like. I posted yesterday that I went to the March for Women's lives, and I guess the media couldn't find enough freaks or hairy looking lesbians to use as tv fodder, so they ignored the whole thing -1.2 million people- altogether. CNN spent the day talking about the "Nascar Voter" (they actually WENT to a Nascar event and hunted down Bush people to talk to, instead of talking to the 1.2 million people who came to the mall) and then Estee Lauder's death. So don't give me this flaming crock about how it's the fault of what the people were wearing in crawford that they're using this line about "aging hippies". News Flash: They would be doing it anyway, because they've been searching desperately for a way to defuse her message. This is just as weak as the "Cindy Sheehan is an Anti-Semite" baloney.

I'll be damned if I think anyone owes that guy an apology; if anything, this proves that he was just spouting the same GOP bullshit party line yesterday that is on cable today.

If someone came around here blasting swift boat bullshit last summer before the ads started airing, would we thank him?

And how do we know that it was "tie-dye" that led them to make that comment? Maybe it was the fact that Cindy Sheehan didn't have a fucking beehive hairdo.

It's a crock of shit, and by perpetuating slams against us "aging hippie" types, all you're doing here is pissing large numbers of your allies off.

151. Hey -- I didn't read this reply before I responded to the other one
I agree with parts of what you're saying -- but other parts, I don't. I'm not worried about, necessarily what and why the media do what they do -- that's another topic (mostly because they're owned by corporations) -- BUT, I'm just saying that minimizing some of the accoutraments could, potentially, tone done some of the rhetoric.

People agree with kicking out the socialists, and minimizing other causes, because it "dilutes the message." I think this is quite similar. Which is more important -- wearing the shirt, or meeting the goal.

P.S. I cannot say you're totally wrong about the media, so I won't -- but I still think that every bit helps. And I'm not disparaging aging hippies. I HATE that things are like this -- and that is my biggest beef with the GOP -- disparaging counter-culture, while advocating for rigid social institutions and paternalistic, archaic philosophies of "order." Please -- it burns my ass. I'm simply thinking strategically.

162. Hey, cats. Yeah, I understand the reasoning and the concept;
Edited on Sun Aug-21-05 08:01 PM by impeachdubya
but I don't agree with it.

I also wasn't aware of anyone kicking anyone out in Crawford; if they were only kicked out because they WERE socialists, that's wrong. (Shit! I support a SPHC system... shhh, don't tell anyone) If they were trying to hijack the protest or use it as a springboard to get a different message out, that's something else.

It's reasonable, at an anti-war protest, to expect that folks stay somewhat 'on message', Instituting a dress code, however, is entirely different.

With regards to the thread you referenced, you should certainly understand that when someone starts with an OP suggesting "banning" something like tie-dye, it's not just the hippie but also the libertarian in me that gets more than a little riled.

But here's the real meat of the issue, for me- aside from the fact that I think it's ludicrous to single out tie-dye (although it does seem to give the people who are mad at their hippie parents a chance to vent) ... This is who many of the anti-war people ARE. Everyone has these assumptions about "middle america", and how we need to do X,Y, and Z to "reach" them.. In case no one has noticed, that kind of shit hasn't really been working. One of the biggest complaints leveled against our last two presidential candidates is that they were trying TOO HARD to be something people didn't think they were. You know, Al Gore took focus groups to see what color shirts to wear. John Kerry "flip-flopped". I bought into some of that stuff; I really thought JK was more 'electable' than, say, Howard Dean. In retrospect, I am SURE that we would have done better running someone like Dean; with a clear, concise, and unequivocal stance against the Iraq war, among other things.

I would humbly posit that we need less "strategic thinking", not MORE. Maybe what we need is to be honest and upfront what we stand for, what we believe in. People, even "middle America", respect that.

I'm tired, really tired, of being told we need to apologize for who we are. Hide it. "Modulate" it. Personally, I think the tie-dyed, joyful masses are one of our best weapons. Aside from the fact that "we are everywhere" and there are more of us than you think (Look at some of the places where the Grateful Dead used to draw huge crowds- middle America indeed) I also think that the contrast between pissed-off, angry, hateful freepers who can't spell and the folks on our side is made more clear, more positive, if the rainbow that is the democratic party, that is the left, that is the opposition to this administration, is brought into full-color focus. Yes, we are the real pro-lifers, and if that means having clothes full of color and women breastfeeding babies and longhairs and shorthairs and even people in cat in the hat hats, hey, that's all part of the antidote to the real culture of death, the cold gray warriors in their dismal, rigid psychic suits of money, greed, power and hate.

Heck, somewhere in middle america there may be a family or two watching those things on the news, and the kids will look at each other and go, you know, Mom and Dad and their singing vegetables and left behind books and abstinence pledges and Toby Keith CDs aren't really where it's at. Maybe those smiling people with the colorful shirts are on to something...

But, really, I don't think the battle for public opinion is going to be fought and won on the basis of what the folks in crawford are wearing, frankly, and if the media wants to disparage Cindy & co. as "aging hippies" it honestly wouldn't matter if they were all in three piece suits. All that would accomplish is to make them really fucking hot.

174. We will have to agree to disagree
This might be the first time that I've ever said the above, to anyone, but I enjoy your posts and writing, a lot. I still think that there are no "cold grey suits" of the right-wing -- it's more like Lee Jeans, shaker-knit sweater vests, Cabello flannels, American Flag sweatshirts and ball-caps with mesh in the back. I will concede, however, that if someone has held onto their anti-hippie bias for 40 years, it is quite possible that they would never be decidedly anti-establishment, anyway -- and they probably eat war for breakfast.

I also agree with you about Howard Dean -- however, would you feel that the public would accept a tie-dyed Howard Dean in a Cat-in-the-Hat top hat -- even with the exact same message? I know it's not the same -- official v. protester -- but unfortunately, appearances do have ramifications -- and your argument can be turned around, too. The right wing will attack, no matter what, so Al Gore's shirts are just another opportunity -- the same as the tie dye.

I suppose we have to stop listening to the right-wing attack dogs, at some point, but this seems like something easily dealt with. And, for the record -- I don't agree with a ban, either. I just wish that some would reel in their "flair."

175. On the right, you left out the mullets
but I think you have the uniform down, otherwise.

I actually said psychic suits, but, that's neither here nor there.

And I have to be honest- the only stuff I've seen from Crawford has been pictures posted here. I haven't been able to stomach what passes for Cable "News" since about a year or so ago, although I guess if I suddenly absolutely MUST get an update on the Aruba situation I will turn it on. But, in the pictures I've seen, the most outrageous stuff, the craziest "flair", has been in the signs people have been holding. I don't recall seeing ANY tie-dye, and maybe one grey, male ponytail. Hardly the Dead at the Greek Theatre, or Burning Man.

So, I'm not really an expert on how this deal is being portrayed on CNNMSNBCFOX.. but I have no doubt that if there's one incoherent guy with face paint in a Lyndon LaRouche t-shirt, they'll pick him to interview for an hour.

And heck, you should try to be more contrarian. I probably "agree to disagree" with someone a couple times a week, here! :)

This civil rights worker (Alabama 1965), antiwar protester (SF 1967, LA/Century City 1968), environmental activist (1990- __), anti-Diebold activist (2004-__), and lifelong Democratic Party voter, supporter and activist (40 years), since I bird-dogged precincts for the California Democratic Council (leftist, grass roots California Democrats, who did all the work) when I was 16 years old, is outa here, if you're going to ban socialists. You have wounded my Wobbly heart!

If what you say is true, the predatory capitalists have won--and you can fold up your tiny little tent and get used to life in a heartless, murderous, cold, cold, cold and dark, predatory capitalist world, in which the strong kick the weak, the rich rob the poor, the healthy sneer at the sick, the bullies and the robber barons prevail, and kindness and communal responsibility are "quaint" notions from the past, long disappeared into the drug-crazed heads of "aging hippies."

Capitalism without socialism is an atrocity.

149. Oh, come on -- you know they've been doing that, *like* forever
I happen to love tie dye. I just ordered a partially tie dyed dress, myself, the other day. Don't get me wrong -- I think these things are wonderful. I'm simply curious why people get all defensive about this.

Let's say I said, I'd pay you one hundred dollars, if you could walk across your front lawn, and not have anyone stare at you. So, you went inside your house, and put on a Superman outfit, a clown wig, and roller skates -- and walked across the lawn.

I'm simply saying that if one KNEW that the media was going to call protesters "aging hippies," -- and, they've been doing it SINCE the 60s, so how could you not know -- and knowing that marginalizing "hippies" is a favorite sport of the right -- if you REALLY cared about ending the war -- if that was a very important goal to you -- and you KNEW that your political enemies would attempt to marginalize and sterotype you, based on your clothing, again: if your GOAL was of the utmost importance, then why the hell couldn't you leave the tie dye at home? It's no different than the Camp Casey organizing staff kicking out the socialists -- which many people, here, supported.

I can't believe I'm about to say something so stupid, but "tie dye dilutes the message."

I'm sorry that I live in a world where I have to say that. See what I'm sayin'? It's not about approving of the 'core murican dress code -- it's realizing that you have opponents, and they're called "neocons," and those fuckers start off at square one thinking that Joe & Mary Jane Seed Hat are stupid -- so they are able to play them like a violin. But, you would rather wear a particular type of shirt than play the game -- not the game to conform -- the game to win, mind you.

68. Poll- Should Bush meet with Cindy

Freepers have been after a poll being done by the Chapel Hill News. I watched it go this a.m. from 129 votes 80% in favor of Bush meeting with Cindy, to 700 votes 84% Bush should not meet with Cindy, in a few minutes. If anyone doubts the freepers can change votes in voting machines, they shouldn't after seeing that. The site had clearly been hacked.

Please help with the vote that now stands: 5055 votes at

33% yes, meet with Cindy

86. Yep. I'm sure this is the new "talking point" memo from the WH sent
to all the hate radio jerks and other talking heads that push the official propaganda line.

They must really be desperate to pony out the "dirty hippie" meme that was so popular with the hawks in the '60s.

It's part of the myth they like to maintain; the libs don't have jobs, live off welfare, and are elitists. (Where we would get the money to be an elitist is one of the ironic contradictions that the zombies aren't supposed to spend too much time trying to reconcile.)

And the other side of the equation is that they view themselves as successful, well dressed, pillars of the community; they believe that they are extremely moral and unfairly burdened by taxes that go to support the dirty hippies and unwed mothers on welfare.

It's all a crock. These people, by and large, don't think for themselves. They take their marching orders and talking points right off the AM radio airwaves from their gods: Limpballs, Hannity, O'Really, Savage, etc. They eat up every mean spirited phrase and spout it back to people in the super market or the corner bar. They firmly believe that if they tow the company line long enough, they will attain the wealth that their radio heroes have themselves and promise them.

If it takes "aging hippies" to get the truth out to a deluded American public, than so be it.

By the way, I am hardly someone anyone would call an aging hippie. I am 42, a college professor with closely shaved hair, don't do drugs, and have (almost) two Master's degrees. I live in a RED state and listen to a vast variety of music, including new music, and wear Bill Blass shoes, pleated slacks, and ties from time to time (if I feel like it).

130. Yep
And like someone else said: hippies were right about Vietnam. So if I had to choose to trust a hippie or a neocon it'd be a hippie in a heart beat!

169. Except for your age, you could well be
indistinguishable from some "aging hippies."

Personally I have 3 degrees, 2 of them Masters in very technical fields.

Most of us do move on as time goes by. We don't look like we did when we coulda been called "hippies."

Despite what the neocons might have us believe, changing opinions, lifestyles etc actually makes sense with changing times and ages and life eras.

Wearing headphones tuned into c-span which replays ALL the sunday political talkshows. It pissed me off so much I ended up cutting a hyalf acre in 30 minutes.

This has to stop. We absolutely have to come up with a way to stop the media lies. My sense of urgency has increased exponentially within the last week or so. I've fucking had it.

What do we do that we haven't done already? I'm up for just about anything at this point.

What do they look like?

There are plenty of fat liberals here...we don't mind the word fat but we do mind it being used as an insult.

Let's concentrate on who they are and what they do, rather than what they look like.

I get your point, that they're belitting the movement because it's "only" aging hippies.

However, someone could point out to them that THE HIPPIES WERE RIGHT ABOUT VIETNAM, AND WE'RE RIGHT AGAIN.

Remember how we all discovered that older folks (like our grandparents) were really cool and already knew most of the stuff we were discovering for ourselves? I figure I'm one of those now. :)

156. He's either brain dead or speaks only in talking points
I was pretending to do a graph of his brain activity and Levin's.

Duncan repeated "ballots, not bullets," and "fledgling democracy," over and over.

I laughed at the "aging hippies," comment. What a crock. He wouldn't know an aging hippie if he saw one. We've changed the uniform and style by now. :P

Anyhow, his line was mostly flat, no genuine brain activity. He was just droning on with the standard talking points blah blah blah.

High Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrogenated Goop, Ring-Dings, Ho-Hos, Cheap, Warm Beer in cans... Since they don't buy all that environmental tree-hugger bullshit, I'd wager they aren't too worried about avoiding pesticides and enviromental hazards.

plus, all that bile isn't good for you.

and I'm quite proud of it, thank you very much. ;-) It's not a put-down, it's a badge of honor!

I still play the guitar, remember all the old protest songs, and I'm 55.

I think it's time we dusted off some of those old hippie songs and got on the road to sing them again!

Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 09:12 AM by Mr_Spock
Fuck them and their meme - it's numbers that count and we got 'em - the vigils proved their idiotic theory wrong - there may be a higher number of hippie-looking people who can spend more time there away from work, but that doesn't mean they don't speak for me. They represent us no matter what T-shirts they wear and I'm proud of them - wish I could be there...

Not all of those crusty bastards looked (or ACTED) like Young Republicans in their youth...Ben Stein looked like one of the friken Weathermen, fachrissake. And we all know the long history of the Pharmaceutical Chimp.

If they keep throwing that tired, gnawed bone out, hoping for the dawgs to bite, Keith Olbermann or Jon Stewart just may dig through some of those neocon's old yearbooks, and come up with a few surprises...

187. Another Proud Aging Hippie Here!
I'm goin' on 54, I marched against the Vietnam War, I worked for McGovern, cheered when Nixon resigned, and I'm doin' it all again now: I marched against the War on Iraq, I supported Clark, then Kerry, and I'm a DU Activist. I'm running for local office. Nearly all of my friends (*the best ones, anyway*) are also Proud Aging Hippies.

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Idiots like Duncan are just trying to marginalize the mainstream opposition to this war in the eyes of their right-wing audience and Mom & Pop Middle America by using what they still think is a slur.

This born and bred New Yorker says "Fuhggeddaboutit!"

So, I'm kickin' it for all of us Proud Aging Hippies!

188. I don't have anything against hippies, but I'm not one, BUT
I am totally in support of Cindy Sheehan and what she's stands for. She is inspiring, she's the reason I'm on this website for one thing. I think she is inspiring to a lot of pretty regular people (I am one.) Not saying hippies aren't regular people, but I guess I mean people who aren't usually politically active can be inspired by Cindy because her message is pure. So I think this portrayal in the media of all her supporters being fringe Left is bull.
