Do people still make moonshine in this country?
It seems to be such a recurring plotline of the Dukes of Hazzard, but that was 20-25 years ago.

You'll have to educate me. I'm just a San Francisco Bay Area suburbanite.

3. Are you too much of a snob to come to the lounge to learn that?
We have frequent discussions about moonshine there.

4. Yup.

And people smuggle legal booze and cigarrettes, too.

Just imagine what would happen if a 20-30% national sales tax ever got on the books.

5. Meth is the new "moonshine."

Meth labs are often found in trailers here in Louisiana.

6. Approximately 10% of the U.S. economy is illicitly based.
Don't ask me for a source. I forget. But the guy who wrote the book I get it from did his homework. Depends on how you define illicit, of course. He was talking about porn and marijuana, moonshine, etc.

while I was stationed in the military down in NC I met some NC reservists who made it and didn't buy any when I had the chance.

13. AFAIK yes
I think it's largely for the sake of higher alcohol content and low cost (Everclear would provide a reasonable alternative but is relatively costly).
