Oh God damn it.... our neighbor was just killed

The two grim reapers from the military showed up at my neighbor's door earlier today. Her son, who was friends with my son in highschool, now 26, was killed in the war.
We don't know much else yet. The mother is sleeping.
I don't know how she feels about the war.

His name was Adrian. Just got married.

My son's best friend, also 26, has been in Mosul for the last year. He got married last year. He's due back in the states to finish his term this October. We gave up all war news some time back; every time casualties were reported, the tension until we heard he was ok was unbearable. Now we are counting down, determined to get him home safe.

I went over to see if I could do anything and the mother is now staying with friends for the night.
I don't know if it was actually war-related, but any death of any serviceman is truly a weight we must all bear, and a sacrifice we must all respect each and every day. In war time as well as peace time... these people are there, every day, with that possibility in constant play.

When your child enlists, there is always the possibility that their life will be cut short. Although it is always in the back of your head, I don't think anyone ever thinks it will happen to them...or this will happen to me... or that this is your day to die.

Whatever the situation, I will convey your respects to the mom when the time is right. She has raised him alone all these years, so there is no immediate family that I know of.
