The New York Times Falls off the Wagon - from Arianna on Huff Post
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 08:09 PM by Pirate Smile

It's hard to believe, but the New York Times is back on Chalabi. Not unlike Courtney Love, the paper of record swears it's going to go straight, stop using, be responsible, really change this time, and then it happens again. For whatever reason, the paper falls off the wagon.

It's an addiction. And addicts embarrass themselves again and again. And you feel stupid for ever having given them the benefit of the doubt.

And they try to hide it. Just look at today's above-the-fold, front-page story on Iraq's constitution. It's headlined "Leaders in Iraq Report Progress on Constitution."

And who are those "leaders"? Once again, Ahmad Chalabi and an American official speaking "on condition of anonymity." And Chalabi is simply identified as "the deputy prime minister."

1. more

It's not surprising that the LA Times story, which did not use Chalabi as a source, turned out to be a much more accurate prediction of what happened on Monday.

LA Times: "SUNNIS CALL FOR DELAY IN CHARTER"
NY Times: "LEADERS IN IRAQ REPORT PROGRESS ON CONSTITUTION"

At least we know it wasn't Judy Miller's fault. The one good thing about prison is that it gives you a great alibi.

4. I'm so glad they started the Huffington Post. We desperately needed
a counterpart to the Drudge crap - and it is so much better. I like the variety of bloggers. I don't read them all but it gives a lot of people without a forum a good spot to get their message out. I love the headlines slamming Bush, Frist, etc.

6. The NYT needs to do a foot-tall, front-page headline apology to the
American people. They need to come clean on Judith Miller's skulduggery and their part in it--and lead a campaign to impeach and remove the Bush regime.

Until they do, we need to make a presumption of lying and disinformation on virtually every word they print.

What they did was absolutely horrible--made all the worse because of their touting themselves as the country's "newspaper of record." They influenced all other U.S. news organizations and some of them quite possibly committed treason.

I don't know how anybody can think that they were ever "on the wagon," after their part in the 100% pack of lies that got us into this war, and got tens of thousands of innocent people slaughtered, and more imprisoned and tortured. How can they have any credibility, on any issue, if they don't acknowledge and make recompense for that crime? They also gave an authoritative platform--and who knows what other aid and comfort--to a so-called journalist who very likely committed treason, very likely got CIA covert contacts around the world killed, and possibly did even worse than that, in addition to leading the nation to war with lie after lie after lie on the front pages of the NYT.

I'm sorry, but it is absurd and naive--or gamesmanship of some kind--to just pass over all of this, and presume that NOW they're going to start telling the truth. Now--after all this blood under the bridge. It is no surprise to me that these warmongers, traitors and liars are now trying to "rehabilitate" Chalabi. Why should this be a "thing"? It is completely expectable from the unrepentant criminal owners, editors and collusive reporters at the NYT.

7. The NYT has pretty much proven itself to be a PNAC tool.
Judy Miller is just a cog in the wheel.

10. Don't know. Many Canadian Constitutional Experts were there including
Edited on Mon Aug-22-05 10:12 PM by applegrove
Bob Rae a great politico when it came to workers rights. He worked with the Tamil Tigers to get a constitutional deal. That is Canada's area of expertise..trying to get disparate cultural groups to live together but with some independance. God knows we have worked hard at it.

Canada is a federation & had to hash out its constitution 20 years ago. So we have experience. I don't think any of these constitutional experts would be there if it was all bullshit!

Too bad Chalabi is still involved. But I doubt very much if anything good in Iraq will happen without a constitution. And creating a federalist society obviously scares the oil poor Sunnis who were used to having all the oil under Saddam despite being in the minority.

Federalism is tricky stuff. Very tough to get an agreement. I hope - for the sake of the troops - that this works. So they can come home sooner rather than later.
