Sandra Tharp figured it would be no big deal this summer when she asked Northwest Local Schools to assign her 5-year-old son to a different elementary school.

District rules allow such transfers and the switch made sense because the new school would be closer to her son's day-care center.

She was stunned when school officials declined her request because of her son's race....

Her request was rejected because Keith, whose mother is white and father is African-American, is considered a minority under a district policy that aims to maintain "racial balance" in its schools.

I know this is not busing but it is the same thing. Putting kids in certain schools to establish diversity. Not saying I agree with the school district on this but segregation did have to be forced upon the US or we would still be a segregated society. things have not changed all that much. If given the chance (I believe) most white parents would want their kids in a mostly white school.

6. the same thing happened to us

we bought a house and were told by the realtor that our kids would go to the school closest to our house. When i went to register my daughter they told me that we were not in the boundaries for that school but one about a mile form our house. We went to the school board and it was true. The boundaries are drawn so stupid. They told us to pout in for a transfer to the closer school. We did and were denied because of minority/majority. Basically they wouldn't let my daughter transfer because she was caucasian. We then went to the real estate company and threatened to sue because they sold us the house under false pretenses. As per the graphic sheet it stated the elementary school to be the one 2 blocks away not the one a mile away. Low and behold we found out the next wee that our transfer had been approved. BTW that was in 1990. Now they have since changed the rules for transfer. If you are a high performing kid (grades) at a low performing school and want to transfer into a high performing school, you can transfer. If you're a low performing kid and want to go to a high performing school you're SOL.
