Withdrawing The Troops . . .We Shouldn't Be Getting Off That Easy

Just so you know, I was against the war from the very beginning for the exact same reasons we are seeing today. But we got this war with the willing support from most of the public (even though it was obvious they are opposed to the necessary sacrifices) and they should pay for what they bought.

Since this country incompetantly compromised the security of Iraq and exposed its people to more terrorism and the excesses of sectarianism, this country should commit the necessary resources to promote a reasonable measure of stability in Iraq. Right now the amount of troops in Iraq are just enough to protect themselves and to provide some patronage security. If that means enacting a draft to provide the necessary troops, so be it. Iraq's pain should be America's pain, Iraq's losses should be America's losses.

This country should finally confront the fact that wars should never be easy. If sacrificing a certain number of our country's children in order to achieve peace will cost political capital, then the war was not justified in the first place.

Even though I don't support immediate withdrawal, I am saddened by the fact that I want to continue occuping a foreign population. I just hope that the occupation will be tempered by strict adherence to basic human-rights provision, by the promise of no detentions, executions, or seizure/destruction of property without due process, and by the promise of complete and immediate withdrawal once stability has been achieved. It may be hoping for too much since we will have to deal with a hostile population, but I feel that it's far more immoral for this country to leave Iraq in a worse condition than we found it in.

1. Since the goal is privatization of Iraq, your hopes are already dashed

The occupation of Iraq is to accomplish two things:

1. Build permanent bases in Iraq to support privatized pirating of Iraq's resources, and

2. To ensure that Iraq's new constitution does not undo the illegal changes that Paul Bremer and the occupation government put in place regarding privatization.

Since this already doesn't have anything to do with human rights, due process, or any of those other things, the occupation should not last one day longer.

But I still don't want to leave that part of the world in total chaos and wipe my hands clean. I hope whatever administration replaces Bush will do away with the corporate meddling of Iraq's resources.
