Pat and his followers would only be happy if America did turn into the Republic of Gilead. Women who "knew their place". Homosexuals and doctors who performed abortions killed and their bodies hung on walls as a warning to others. The complete, absolute takeover of the United States by people like Robertson and his sheep.

Atwood didn't get into it too much as I recall, but she implied that African-Americans had been rounded up and, at best, segregated from the rest of society. Wasn't there a reference to the siege of Detroit? And they were referred to as the Children of Cain? I have no doubt whatsoever that Robertson and his ilk would love to see that happen, or worse.

14. It is a great book.

I'm a huge fan of Margaret Atwood, a brilliant Canadian author. I think the book is partly meant as satire. I'd love to speak to her about it. But, oh my...it's so, so plausible.

I hope you enjoy the book (although reading it, "enjoy" may not be exactly the right word). It's writing at its very best.

BTW: Atwood has gotten into speculative fiction recently. You also may want to check out her latest novel, "Oryx and Crake".
