Something really has to be done about Pat Robertson
Hell, you think if any of us said anything like the following we'd still be walking free to talk about it? What a piece of shit.

"If he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war."
-- On Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, August 2005

"If they look over the course of 100 years, I think the gradual erosion of the consensus that's held our country together is probably more serious than a few bearded terrorists who fly into buildings."
-- On whether "activist judges" are more of a threat than terrorists, May 2005

"Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up."
-- Referring to the State Department's location while criticizing the agency, October 2003

1. If any one of us said this:
"Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up."
-- Referring to the State Department's location while criticizing the agency, October 2003

we'd be locked up as a terrorist threat and never see the light of day or a lawyer.

17. Maybe not that...
...but it would certainly be used as an excuse to monitor you and any group you were even remotely connected to. And the threat of being Gitmoized would make nice blackmail to coerce someone into being an informant or provoceteur.

18. Hey, you're way off base
He was joking

and you're taking him out of context

and it's all a liberal smear campaign

and he's speaking figuratively

and he's a straight-shooter who speaks from the heart

and blah blah blah...

Even if nothing comes of it, the effort should be made.

3. He is just spouting mainstream Republican ideas
Ann Coulter has called for the US to kill all the Muslim leaders so we can convert the masses to Christianity.

Phil Gramm, former Senator from Texas, wants liberalism to get to the point where they hunt down liberals using hunting dogs.

Ken Mehlman (sp), I believe, thinks Karl Rove should get a medal for treason.

This sounds like a fatwa, like the one against Salman Rushdie. How can anyone think our homegrown religious fanatics are any different from those who put out that fatwa?

22. generally pretty fair. he says beat. and i was high at 18 months
Dobson advocates the spanking of children from 15-18 months to eight years old. According to Dobson, "pain is a marvelous purifier." (Dare to Discipline, p.6) He argues that "it is not necessary to beat the child into submission; a little bit of pain goes a long way for a young child. However, the spanking should be of sufficient magnitude to cause the child to cry genuinely." (Ibid., p.7.)

In The Strong-Willed Child (p.73), Dobson writes: "Some strong-willed children absolutely demand to be spanked, and their wishes should be granted." As for the magnitude of the spanking, he argues that "two or three stinging strokes on the legs or buttocks with a switch are usually sufficient to emphasize the point, 'You must obey me.'" (The Strong-Willed Child, pp. 53-4.)

Dobson directly connects parental authority to social authority: "By learning to yield to the loving authority...of his parents, a child learns to submit to other forms of authority which will confront him later in his life -- his teachers, school principal, police, neighbors and employers." (The Strong-Willed Child, p. 235.)

He frequently portrays the child as the natural enemy of the parent and emphasizes that it is necessary to punish the child to uphold parental authority. "When you are defiantly challenged, win decisively." (Dare to Discipline, p. 36.)

In The Strong-Willed Child, Dobson draws a strong analogy between child rearing and dog rearing. He tells a story in which the family dog refuses to leave his resting place on the lid of the toilet seat. According to Dobson, a "vicious fight" between him and the dog resulted in which he "fought him up one wall and down the other, with both of us scratching and clawing and growling and swinging the belt ." He concludes that "just as surely as a dog will occasionally challenge the authority of his leaders, so will a little child--only more so." (emphasis Dobson)

To deal with crying, Dobson recommends: "Real crying usually lasts two minutes or less but may continue for five. After that point, the child is merely complaining, and the change can be recognized in the tone and intensity of his voice. I would require him to stop the protest crying, usually by offering him a little more of whatever caused the original tears." <2>

31. This is horrifying!
Oh my God! I don't know what's worse, the way he treats his dog or the way he treats his son!

My guess is that Dobson has a very, very , very small penis himself and is using his power over weaker beings to feel better about himself.

33. a funny. logistically focus on family is our neighbor
Edited on Tue Aug-23-05 10:05 AM by seabeyond
he is in colorado springs. we are in the panhandle of texas. the biggest, center city in all this area. i am watching a bond, connection, like a fungus feeds its way into this town with dobson. my kids in a christian school, i watched the connection. the guy who ran the school, hooked up with the minister and THE CHURCH. they changed the name recently.

anyway, last spring my niece got a big envelope from focus on the family. i wanted to know why she was singled out. and why i didnt know about it. and what it was before giving to her. they couldnt believe i might have a problem

there was a book dobson wrote about him

i decided i needed to read to understand. first two pages a really stupid, non connected in love, a fake letter to his son. couldnt read, so stupid. then goes to talk about dobson, two paragraph down, in print said "and he is a mans man"

put the book down and said what the fuck

any man i know that has to say he is a mans, man, is not a man

34. "any man i know that has to say he is a mans, man, is not a man"
good point!

There is a book called "Baby Wise" that is written by fundies. They've rewritten it for a secular audience but the child-hating behind it is still there and is exactly what you are describing of Dobson.

He thinks that fathers should shower with their sons, so that they can see how the father's penis is bigger. This is somehow supposed to imprint masculinity upon the child and "discourage homosexuality".

30. yep.
I read the post about Dobson's "discipline" ideas and was astounded. It was on this board a couple months back. It was awful. It said that if you have done everything you can to care for them and they still cry you should strike them. It also said that babies are "depraved", and it told where to strike them not to leave marks. It also said you should "break" their "spirit" before the age of 2.

The other article about Dobson and his penis was on a week or so back. It claimed you could train your male child not to be gay if you showed him your penis in the shower. --No joke.

32. Jeez! I'm lucky to be alive. (Thanks, Dr. Spock!)
I cried incessantly as a baby. My mother tells stories of holding Dr. Spock's book in one hand open to the page that said, "Sometimes babies cry for no reason" while she rocked my crying infant self all night long.

Thanks, Mom!

28. Pat Robertson must be gearing up for a run for the White House......
and he wants to show everybody how tough he can be. Pat will squash those evil Iraqi Insurgents and bring Christianity to all countries of the Middle East. Pat must have intentionally overlooked one of the Ten Commandments, like his good Christian brother George W., something about thou shall not kill. I guess their GOD will forgive them for this oversight, maybe?
