RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - Three car bombs exploded in quick succession near U.S. forces in Ramadi, west of Baghdad, on Tuesday in an apparently coordinated strike by insurgents, police and witnesses said.

In the first blast, a car blew up as a U.S. convoy was passing through the centre of the Sunni Arab city, police said. One U.S. army vehicle was damaged in the explosion and three Iraqi bystanders were wounded, the police said.

It was not clear if any U.S. troops were wounded or killed in the attack, which came hours after Sunni Arab leaders warned of violence after the Shi'ite and Kurdish-dominated parliament was presented with a draft constitution Sunnis objected to.

The U.S. Marines in Ramadi did not immediately reply to a request for information.

1. I've heard several reports that the insurgency will kick into high gear
after the constitution is submitted...if that's true we should see the results soon. At least the US *FINALLY* seems to be waking up to the idiocy of this war.

29. I hate to be such a pessimist, but I think this Constitution will do
nothing but lead straight to civil war. Of course, that assumes they aren't already in a civil war. In any case I doubt it will do anything to calm down the violence.

30. two words
no way. I believe the reports that say this "insurgency" is made up of many different factions with different desires. The Sunnis are just one faction.

Also it is too simplistic as the news reports say that this is a Sunni-Shiia problem. There are divisions within both the Shiites and the Sunnis themselves over this fraud of a constitution. The fact that the US is pushing for a deadline is exacerbating the problem as well.

It is fucked and the US needs to get out.

2. Good Lord! I thought I'd never finish reading the list.
Ask most Americans how many troops have died, they'd probably say, oh, about 1500 or 1600.

One thousand eight hundred seventy one DEAD. The numbers per day are increasing. So much for "last throes." It's over. We've lost.

That usually gets people to listen.

Some months in Vietnam the kill rate was four or five times that. Serious guerilla fighting has yet to break out. Which does not mean it won't. What we're seeing here is insurgency and sabotage. War is still a step away. In Iraq, with it's sympathetic public and capacity for brutal urban warfare, it would be a disaster beyond belief.

36. Last night I caught just a little bit of a military channel
Edited on Tue Aug-23-05 01:46 PM by Blue_In_AK
doc on Khe Sanh in 1968 (my husband likes to watch the military channel, don't ask me why), but I watched it because I knew someone back in 1970 who had been stationed at Khe Sanh. I met him afterwards when he was anti-war and a junkie, a habit he picked up while in Vietnam, and watching this documentary, I could understand why. The seige of Khe Sanh was horrible beyond belief -- not to minimize the atrocities in Iraq in any way, but I don't know if these comparisons are useful. What did occur to me though is that watching the military channel has maybe the opposite effect of what they intend -- if you weren't anti-war before watching one of these programs, it seems you certainly would be afterwards. All of that destruction and death -- and for what? Millions of people died in Vietnam. I read that if America had had comparable losses to the Vietnamese, we would have had to sacrifice 28 million American lives. That's just obscene.

The important thing is that we need to get out of Iraq NOW, before any more American lives are lost.

35. Important Question
I read in an earlier post that the total dead 1821 (sorry if I am off) is not accurate.

Someone said that it is MUCH higher, like around 10-15 thousand, but the media doesn't count the troops who hace died in the hospital from injuries.

Is this true? Any links?

If so, word HAS to get out that the number is much higher!

39. No, it's not true
This is a deeply stupid and easily debunked rumor that for some reason seems to pop up on these boards time and again. The current death count of 1872 includes dozens, if not hundreds, of troops who died in hospital in Germany and the United States as a result of action in Iraq.

What you heard is false.
