I just got a package from the "true majority" and someone destroyed it.

I went to the mail box to get my mail and someone destroyed a package that I got from the "true majority." All of the rest of my mail was fine, but this package was opened and someone ripped up the papers and destroyed the pen they sent me. WTF? The top was ripped off by a tool of some sort, if I had to guess I'd say it was a box cutter. WTF? What do I do, who do I complain to?

Bringing the USPS Inspector down on someone's head is a highly effective tactic. Sounds like a pussy office, right? No, you have to remember that the postal system is federal and messing with the mail carries SERIOUS PENALTIES. People have been locked up on mandatory minimum sentences for decades just for stealing the neighbor's mail.

And postal inspectors aren't afraid to brandish that big stick.

When in college, we called them in because the University housing authority was having the dorm resident assistants withold our mail to force us to come to a pointless "floor meeting." We just asked the postal inspector to work them up and down on the phone, and that's all he did. Not only did we have our mail pronto, we pretty much had the housing people under our heel for the entire school year. Whenever they got on our nerves, we'd remind them the statute of limitations hadn't run out and of the jail penalty for interfering with mail and threatened to press the case, and they'd back off.

I'd hate to be whoever messed with the Crawford Peace House's mail. I would guess that the postal inspector is much more aggressive about pursuing officials that work inside the system.

You should definitely call the highest ranking Postal Inspector you can find for your state. Also, after you have his card/info, you should call the "true majority" office, give them the inspector's contact info, and ask them to follow up with anyone that lives nearby you on their mailing list and ask them if their mail got mangled, too, then follow up with the Inspector.

I've been down this road before, trying to get resolution for a client for non-controversial mail that was getting ripped up -- never did resolve what was happening to it. The best we could do was pinpoint it to the local postoffice, but no one would fess up and there was no way to prove intent.

It's easy to cry Federal Crime but quite another to prove it.

but even so, what would fingerprints prove? Even if you could get the route carrier's prints off the piece, it'd be unnecessary, since we knew who ultimately delivered the piece. And even if there were other postal handlers' prints on it, how do you prove they were the ones who damaged the piece?

In our case, the complaint was made known, the postal authorities spread the word throughout the local office, and we've not had troubles since, so it was ultimately resolved in our favor.

If I had to guess what happened with the OP, unless there were other instances of progressive mail getting destroyed, I suspect it could have been something as innocuous as a machine jam.

Someone took mail out of my mail box (and my neighbors), we reported it to the local Post Office (along with the guys name/address)and they said "contact the Sheriff". I did, the Sheriff's office said "contact the USPS"! :eyes:

Usually the local post office is not a good place to start. Above them is several layers of bureacracy. If the guys at the top aren't, someone inbetween will be bored enough to revel in the excitement of your case. Or have an axe to grind that he can use your case for.

(I'm to understand that the USPS is second only to the school system for the level of petty backbiting that goes on among the workforce.)
