Wow. Did anyone listen to the military callers on Randi Rhodes
Edited on Tue Aug-23-05 06:59 PM by Cleita
today. First there was a military wife and mother, who said she hoped if her husband was going to die that it would be in Afghanistan because then she could tell her children he died a hero. She couldn't tell them that about Iraq. Then there was another who told how the guys know Iraq is a lot of BS and that they were lied to but everyone is afraid to speak up because Rumsfeld would retaliate.

Finally, there was a gulf war vet, who said that Bush is making the soldiers kill people who aren't guilty of anything. He was the strongest voice that Bush had to be gotten out of office because of what he is doing not only to the military but America as a whole.

It looks like there could be someting close to mutiny coming.

29. We never did hear the results of the military vote in the last election
If it had been overwhelmingly repub - or repub majority AT ALL - that fact would've been trumpeted in every media outlet available, don't you think? The silence about the election results within the military has been deafening. And that tells me all I need to know.

36. freeper military in-laws in town last weekend
and...guess what? They agree with Hagel on Iraq. Former Navy jet pilot, retiring Admiral, current Navy pilot (Annapolis grad.). And they're not even sounding like freepers anymore.
They don't think we have enough troops. They believe we'll have to stay for years. And they're not optimistic about a new government in Iraq. They believe we may have created an Islamic fundamentalist state. All believe Bush is useless.
We had the most harmonious reunion in decades.
Bush really is a uniter.

3. Wow! Truth is suppose to make you free. Except in the military or
when repubs are in the White House. These guys belong in the same book Hitler, Stalin, and Idi Amin are going to be in. Why is society still producing people like this?

6. I heard it
And I think that, that woman who said her father fought in Viet Nam..."for nothing" and now her husband in Iraq..."for nothing" and that it's all BS and who kept saying she was nervous and was crying, her words should be repeated to the whole country! She put it all so well. Even Randi said everyone's thinking this but they don't know how to say it. I hope somehow it'll be re-broadcast.

7. She was great wasn't she.
I couldn't remember everything she said and was hoping that someone would chime in. I'm sure they will do a best of Randi with this. It was just too heartbreaking not to be repeated.

24. Audio now available on Randi's webpage.
Stacey, the woman who called, is now also on Randi's message board. Go to the "heard on the show" section to find her posts.

11. Welcome to DU!!!!
Had to do that - I snuck in without a welcome because I started posting right before the last election. Everyone was too busy to notice.

I'm not an expert, but I think one of the hardest thing sfor military families to do is to come to grips with the fact that the cause their relatives fought and/or died for wasn't really just or necessary. It must be very, very hard to shed that security blanket that "at least he/she died for a worthwhile cause".

9. I remember how smug and snearing the Republicans were in their
confidence of the military vote in 2000. They were sickening. Their confidence was so solid that I thought they were cooking the books.

Now, after I just finished reading about the Republican mom who said that her son couldn't serve implying that it was beneath their family - then, after reading the story above - I'd have to say that the pendulum has SWUNG.

BOIIINNNG! And Bush and his regime did it to themselves. How could they ever think that they could get our youth to shoot innocent people and torment/torture people and to fight the wrong country and love it?

We have a rag tag hyper delusional people leading us.

But, maybe we are leading them now.

14. Consider sending your thoughts to Stars and Stripes letters
They do print civilian letters, but if you are a vet, are on a base, or are in other ways affiliated with the military via family etc, do mention that to the editor. Name, address and phone number please.

17. We invaded Afghanistan to flush out Usama bin Laden
whom it was felt was responsible for the 9-11 attacks. This was legitimate in that sense. I suppose in Afghanistan they are still trying to find Usama, Mullah Omar and the other players in the Taliban, who have declared themselves our enemies. I know there is that oil pipeline deal as well, which does make the Bush administration's motives suspect.

Iraq just doesn't have any connection to this and did nothing to us. We were after the oil after all. Ask yourself why we have built 14 military bases there to protect nothing else but the oil fields and the oil pipelines.

I hope the woman's husband doesn't die either as he has signed up for many more years.

Welcome to DU. :toast:

31. The Afghanistan invasion was planned in May of 2001 for Oct.
As near as I can figure out, the invasion was planned because the taliban signed a contract with an Argentina firm to put in the pipe line that the US had been trying to do for 10 years. After the invasion, the first contract was thrown out and the one for the US signed. It was just "luck" that of all the people in the world to be behind bin Ladin after 9-11 - it was Afghanistan.

35. Randi Rhodes yesterday. "John Doe" took a case to court
to fight this, but lost. Seems the Coward-In-Charge can write an executive order declaring a national emergency and extend the duty time of the military as long as he wants.

almost all military and ex-military.I know when my son got sent back to Baghdad,he alluded to me that there were a lot of disgruntled soldiers.(he doesn't tell me much because I tend to get emotional). Two of his friends have been discharged due to PTSD.(he isn't in the infantry-he's in support services)...the bitch is-all the soldiers are having to fight now, whether they are in a "combat" role or an office job.
