6. Joan Baez - a LEGEND - KICK!!
If you're young enough that you don't personally remember Joan Baez and her anti-war efforts during the Vietnam years, you need to hear what she has to say this time around. She's been carrying this torch for close to 50 years.

I promise it will be a memory to cherish - she'll be telling her story!

Let's all rally around a tireless spokesperson for human rights!

Limpballs or some other media whore said this event was organized by the dems and the left.

Brad (I think) said "If the left were organized, Jesse Jackson would be President."

48. I just now saw this thread and listened to the Baez interview
and I haven't been this moved by anything in a VERY ... LONG ... TIME!

After the break in the Brad Show when they returned to the recorded sounds of Joan humming and then singing We Shall Overcome, she started singing along with her own recorded voice, doing harmony -- precisely as she did on so many of her recordings that I had on vinyl back in the 1960's!

I'm tellin' ya, the TEARS just STARTED FLOWING and they're still goin'!

I'm sure most of you know that this lady has done more for the downtrodden and abused in this world than anyone I can think of offhand. For so many years, the amazing voice pouring from her golden "pipes" has accompanied the movements that have *mattered*. She hasn't just sung along, either -- she has LED.

She leads with her music, with her voice that's so crystal clear even now I just wanna tune out everything around me and listen to her.

I remember on one of my albums of hers, and this was in 1968 when I had gotten pregnant by a soldier headed for Vietnam (whom I wouldn't see again for over 30 years), there was a song called "Saigon Bride." Every time I played it, I thought of my own G.I.Joe and wondered what he was doing, was he in Saigon? Was he in Da Nang? Was he out in the boonies, humpin' the brush? Had he found a lady over there and forgotten about me? Had the fighting he was doing changed him?

I only learned the answers to all those questions in 1998 when our daughter located Joe and told him who she was. He HAD forgotten me, but it was the fog of war that did it, not a hardened heart.

I had a rough time of it, and actually LOST my daughter -- our daughter -- for almost 30 years because I had no way to fight my family and a culture that looked down so hard on an "unmarried pregnant teenager" in those days. I let relatives adopt her and they kept her away from me ... until she was grown and then she could do what she wanted.

She didn't contact me until she was 29 -- and that's how I found Joe again, through our daughter.

During the heartbreaking time of my pregnancy, I listened to Joan Baez sing her songs protesting the war in Vietnam, and I cried. Hearing her just now singing harmony on We Shall Overcome with a recording of her own voice that must have been made so long ago, I just broke down and bawled like a baby.

I am so heartened to see her pitching in on this new anti-war effort, in part because I know her voice will touch so many from "our" time as it did me. GOD BLESS YOU, JOAN BAEZ! I will be listening tonight when she relates her history in political movements and sings some more for us. I wish I'd known I could have heard her last night, but I can surely imagine how that went. I also hope SOMEONE recorded that and will release it soon!

And GOD BLESS BRAD, for bringing us live broadcasts from Camp Casey! Now that I know he's there, I'll be tuning in as much as I possibly can.

HEAVEN HELP US ALL! (My favorite protest song of Joan's.)

And btw, I just typed up the lyrics to a new protest song that I have written for THIS nightmare war. Yes, I'm a musician, as you might have guessed, and a singer-songwriter too. And one who is very very glad she found DU! :D
