For some groups the numbers are much higher. Nearly one-third of blacks, representing about 135,000 Canadians, said they had been treated unfairly in the past five years, compared with 21 per cent of South Asians and 18 per cent of Chinese.>

This is obviously 20% too much but it is much better than America. Over 60% of Arabs and South Asians have been discriminated against or perceived they were; 64% of African-Americans and 63% of other non-whites have been discriminated against(source: http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/poll_race030123.html).

1. what is discrimination? what is racism?

these concepts are very hard to grasp. i think that polls that ask "have you been the victim of racism" or "have you been discriminated against" might be somewhat skewed. some instances are easily identifiable. some are mere perceptions.

2. They certainly are not accurate...

...since many of these incidents were perceived slights. However, in my opinion, comparing the answers to the same question in other countries is a fairly good way to compare the relative level of racism in nations. Most liberals would probably agree that Canada is less racist than America. What is startling here is the massive gap, not the fact that a gap in favor of Canada exists.
