29. Really! And we will! We WILL! First, we need to throw electronic voting
machines into 'Boston Harbor' (so to speak)! Right now, Bushite electronic voting machine companies control the vote tabulation with SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code. That is why we have such an incredibly unrepresentative government in DC. The Bush Cartel has been stealing elections for some time, by various methods, but now--with electronic voting--they have guaranteed, undetectable control over who gets nominated and elected in both parties.

These electronic voting machines (mostly Diebold and ES&S--both run by far rightwingers) are extremely insecure and hackable. One hacker, a couple of minutes, is all it takes--and it's untraceable. Nobody has any right to review the source code in these electronic voting machines and tabulators--not even our elected secretaries of state. (That's what happened as a result of an infusion of $4 billion into the states by Bush's "pod people" Congress--corruption of election officials and the signing of contracts with "trade secret" provisions for tabulating our votes!!!) And the system of audits and recounts is completely inadequate for verifying electronic voting and tabulation.

We MUST change this. It is still doable at the local/state level, despite the corruption. The power over election systems still resides at the local/state level, where ordinary people still have some influence. We must act while we still have that power. They could well take that power away before 2008, by federalizing election systems. Then it's all over. That's the end of our democracy--and it will be one hell of a difficult project to get it back.

Act now! Join your local election reform group--or form your own--and start putting pressure on local/state officials, and, most important, start educating other citizens. For more information and action ideas, go to the "DU 2004 Election Results and Discussion Forum" at
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topics&forum=203

We need...

Paper ballots hand-counted at the precinct level (--Canada does it in one day, although speed should not even be a consideration, just accuracy and verifiability)

or, at the least

Paper ballot (not "paper trail") backup of all electronic voting, a 10% or better audit (automatic recount), strict security, and NO SECRET, PROPRIETARY programming code! (...jeez!).

-------

The more verifiable our elections become, the more representative our officials will be! That's the promise of democracy! That's what it's all about! We can do it! We can restore democracy! We're Americans, goddammit! We INVENTED it!

I especially like the last one. I didn't even know he read Chomsky. Now, I like him even more. And the picture with the poor children is very sweet ... contrasts well with any picture of the chimperor.

7. This goes for everyone reading this thread!
if you have not seen "The Revolution will not be Televised" yet, run to your local non-corporate video store (they won't carry it) and rent a copy. It's a documentary by two Irish guys (I forget their names right now) that were there filming during the 2002 coup against Chavez.

You get to the see the media for what it really is! Go run, now!

13. Bravo, Minstrel Boy. So good.
Too bad there isn't a photo to show the difference in their "bases," wouldn't you say?

Chavez's going forward, Bush & Co. want to go backwards.

Very intense differences. Great photo choices.

Anyone who can't see the graciousness and goodness in Chavez needs to look again. Too bad some didn't rub off on the Idiot in Chief when he walked past Chavez.

He knows how to be in charge of a situation. He doesn't need an "Unca Dick" to tell him what to do next.
