Sarin gas in Iraq
I keep hearing right-wingers say that this was found and saying Bush didn't lie because it was found. What is the real story on this?

1. Tell them to provide you a link -
It is up to them to support their allegations.

3. Do you really think
(or rather, do they really think) that if this was even remotely spinnable as being anything resembling the truth it would not be international news for months.

Distillation of the above: bullshit

6. Cannisters that were rusted beyond practical use.
Stuff that had been either lost by the Iraqi military or simply warehoused.

It certainly wasn't the tons of hyper-deadly shit that the WH claimed.

10. Look at Obermann from yesterday
Edited on Tue Aug-23-05 09:31 PM by EC
in his transcripts, I haven't seen his blog in a few days so I don't know if it is there. But he reported yesterday on a NEW lab that was found where they were developing weapons, that has gone up after the invasion, it's a NEW lab, not from Saddam.

On edit: sorry, I lost track of time, it was back on the 13th and I can't get the transcripts for that but here is an artical in the W.Post on it:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/08/13/AR2005081300530.html

<snip>
Combined, the chemicals would yield an agent capable of "lingering hazards" for those exposed to it, Boylan said. The likely targets would have been "coalition and Iraqi security forces, and Iraqi civilians," partly because the chemicals would be difficult to keep from spreading over a wide area, he said.

Boylan said the suspected lab was new, dating from some time after the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003. The Bush administration cited evidence that Saddam Hussein's government was manufacturing weapons of mass destruction as the main justification for the invasion. No such weapons or factories were found.

12. This story is from May 2004. Probably 1 shell left over from '80s.
From the BBC:

The 155mm artillery round had been set up as a roadside bomb and it exploded before the US military were able to defuse it...He said the round dated back to the Iran-Iraq war and coalition officials were not sure whether the fighters even knew what it contained.

Apparently it was so horrible, it didn't injure anyone.

longer BBC story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3722255.stm

I remember when this came out...the RW was acting all smug and when it pretty much turned out to be nothing it quietly died in the MSM.

HOWEVER, that doesn't stop the freepers etc. from bringing this up over and over again when they repeat the "talking points."

14. When they first find this unidentified stuff, they
claim it is WMD. Then they find out it is old stuff that is degraded molecularly to the point it wouldn't harm a flea. But that part never gets reported. Every claim of "found WMD" has turned out to be premature misinformation.

16. According to Hans Blixx and David Kaye. No WMD's in Iraq.
Not even a little. Blixx was the UN Inspector and David Kaye was Bush's inspector. Before being forced out of Iraq. Blixx destroyed everything that could even be remotely construed to be a WMD. It would not suprize me if he even melted Saddams shotgun because it would fire more than one round. It could be called a weapon capable of mass destruction by a desperate President in search of a legal defense.

Where is Kryton when you need him? I can hear him now. Listen you little ninny of a chimpanzee. My apologies to the chimpanzees. But there are no weapon in Iraq. There are no weapon to give us flack. There are no weapon to attack. That's Curious. Sorry, I went into Cat In The Hat mode somehow. I'm shuting down for a system analysis.

Al Qaida may be trying to set up chemical weapons facilities in Iraq. Bush just might get his wish.

33. No, "I believe they also found old shells of Sarin from the 80s"
A shell "of sarin" is a useable ordinace. A shell "with TRACES" is not. It's the differenec between unaccounted for and has. Your statement says they have it. Mine says it's unaccounted for. Lets not start that again. LMAO

had some type of poison gas because either Bush1 or Reagan gave it to him, but as far as I know Saddam used it against the Kurds.
They probibly want to build on the rumor that some was left-over
