Support Chavez; Buy CITGO Gas

Buy Your Gas at Citgo: Join the BUY-cott!
by Jeff Cohen

Looking for an easy way to protest Bush foreign policy week after week? And an easy way to help alleviate global poverty? Buy your gasoline at Citgo stations.
And tell your friends.

Of the top oil producing countries in the world, only one is a democracy with a president who was elected on a platform of using his nation's oil revenue to benefit the poor. The country is Venezuela. The President is Hugo Chavez. Call him "the Anti-Bush."

Citgo is a U.S. refining and marketing firm that is a wholly owned subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company. Money you pay to Citgo goes primarily to Venezuela -- not Saudi Arabia or the Middle East. There are 14,000 Citgo gas stations in the US. (Click here http://www.citgo.com/CITGOLocator/StoreLocator.jsp to find one near you.) By buying your gasoline at Citgo, you are contributing to the billions of dollars that Venezuela's democratic government is using to provide health care, literacy and education, and subsidized food for the majority of Venezuelans.

Instead of using government to help the rich and the corporate, as Bush does, Chavez is using the resources and oil revenue of his government to help the poor in Venezuela. A country with so much oil wealth shouldn't have 60 percent of its people living in poverty, earning less than $2 per day. With a mass movement behind him, Chavez is confronting poverty in Venezuela. That's why large majorities have consistently backed him in democratic elections. And why the Bush administration supported an attempted military coup in 2002 that sought to overthrow Chavez.

8. I wish I knew. Some DU entrepreneur
knows I am sure. I was told that my idea of turning the gas into a jelly and dropping it on
*'s ranch would not insure it got to the poor but that it might raise their (our) spirits.

12. He needs to contact Joe Kennedy
Kennedy does this with heating oil in Massachusetts in the winter. I bet they could put their heads together and come up with a plan for this distributing idea. Joe runs Citizens Energy - for the oil.

13. NOT SO FAST
I hate to bust CommonDreams on this, but here goes:

CITGO is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the national oil company of Venezuela, so naturally most of its crude oil comes from there. However, in February 2002 CITGO also imported from Middle Eastern countries in the following quantities:

Iraq: 1,342,000 barrels
Kuwait: 437,000 barrels

It was probably to help them through the transition.

20. Right. But other things equal, who's the better choice?
Citgo or Exxon? How about Valero? Shell? At least by buying Citgo, like gas at Costco, you're making a statement. Got to think about it that way.

18. Did you see how Chavez has suggested that Venezuela provide cheaper
gas for the poor in the US? No wonder the Bushies and Pat "Fatwa" Robertson want to kill him!

Hi NWH. I saw the news a few minutes ago.

That could destabalize the Bush cabal quickly, they know that, and they're not sure what to do about him.

No one at DU will be surprised at this. Pat "Fatwa" Robertson was saying what the Bushies would say if they wouldn't be heard by reporters. I have to wonder if Robertson is losing his mental functions, making such a careless statement in public. The for-profit murders are supposed to be decently hidden from the proles.

To add more insult to the moneymen, Chavez favors returning lands to indigenous peoples:
