KIRO host can't manufacture the emotion over what's going on in Iraq
I'm listening to Mike Webb in Seattle. http://www.kiro710.com/ Mike's a liberal and he has another KIRO host on, Dave Ross, who is supposed to be a centrist. When Webb asked him why he's not as outraged as he should be considering the mess in Iraq, the guy responded by saying that he doesn't have skin in the game since his daughter is in the Peace Corp. And his taxes are so low because of the Bush tax cuts. So, he just can't manufacture the concern.

There you have it folks. Some people just don't give a shit.

1. Dave Ross said this?
Ross ran for congress last year and this doesn't sound like something he would say.

2. I agree
That doesn't sound like Dave. What really changed his mind and got him into the race for the congressional seat was going to Iraq twice. The first time was okay (given the circumstances) but the second time was almost nightmarish -- he was essentially confined to his hotel, you could hear the bombs going off during his broadcasts. Dave is still something of a centrist, but I cannot believe he would just brush off the Iraq war with a Freeper response like that.

4. Not only did he say it...
Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 12:09 PM by eleny
He talked about how we have an all volunteer army. And that people who join know that they'll be going to Iraq just as people who smoke cigarettes know the dangers of smoking.

I'm not in Washington State, so I don't know this radio guy, his program or his history. I only listen to Mike Webb via streaming audio. I thought it so callous when Ross said that he doesn't feel things because his daughter is in the Peace Corp. And when Webb said that Ross paid taxes and that's a connection to the war, Ross said he doesn't pay much because of the tax cuts.

5. That is absolutly not Dave Ross' comments
If it was Dave he may have been responding sarcastically. There are other more conservative hosts on KIRO but I feel 100% sure that would not be Dave Ross's position.

6. Mike Webb's disappointment was evident
When Ross said that he couldn't manufacture certain feelings about the war (because he didn't have much personally invested) because his taxes were so low, Mike Webb then beseeched Ross to feel something from a sense of citizenship.

If there's an archive, you might want to listen to the segments. It sounds like Ross was pretty much out of character from comments posted here. I don't know about his program or his politics. But he sounded quite casual and that prompted me to post about him. I've seen videos of people who are passionate about their pro war stand. But this guy just didn't seem to care from the last few exchanges with Webb on last night's MW program.

7. That's what it all boils down to:
Conservatives just don't care about anything unless they and/or their families are *personally* involved. The I Got Mine Syndrome. "I'm doing okay, so who cares what's going on in the rest of the world?" :eyes:

8. Dave Ross is not a conservative
He's more a centrist Democrat. I've listened to this man for years, and no way would he seriously take a stand like that. He's very straight forward. My guess would be that he was being honest when he said what he said. I mean, as much as any of us hate the Iraq war, isn't it true that those of us who do not have a family member over there don't have as much of a stake in it on a very personal level? And would it not be dishonest of us to claim that we felt exactly the way someone who does have someone over there does or that we knew exactly how someone who does feels? That is not the equivalent of being cold and callous about the war. Dave is just not going to pretend that he feels something he could not possibly feel since neither of his daughters are over there.

And for what it's worth, I am not dissing Mike Webb. I've listened to him for a long time also, and really like him too.

11. He wasn't saying these things because he couldn't feel exactly like...
....family of soldiers. I don't recall that being a part of their conversation. If that were his point, I could somewhat understand. He just didn't seem to care at all and was being honest about why. And you could feel Mike's reaction when he tried to appeal to Ross's citizenship.

9. For every action
there is a reaction. The reaction may manufacture something.

12. This is, in fact, the Moderate /Conservative Faustian bargain...
I think a lot of "Main Street" Republicans in fact voted for the Republicans to get their taxes cut, and have decided that they'll let the RWers run the sho on foreign policy and cultural issues, because it won't affect "them" (their duughter won't need an abortion, their son won't need to go into the army, they won't be inconvenienced by Patriot Act crackdowns, etc.
