I have nearly always lived in Hampton Roads (born and raised, still live in Norfolk).... okay so we know him well here..... Dick head!
Now this is just off the top of my head, community knowledge.... you could look it up.
In the late 1960's, early 1970's he bought one of those local public access channels. .. a UHF channel, Ch27.... I remember.
Anywho..... he started by showing old syndicated shows (I loved Dick Vandyke and Leave it to Beaver, Hogan's Heroes... poor bob crane).... so as we all know advertising pays a heck of a lot of bills & then some. And after the cartoons, old movies, and syndication paid off the farm, things started to CHANGE!
It started with a kids' show called the Jim and Tammy show.... That's right jim and tammy faye baker! It was a Bible story show,..... romper room for christians.
A friend of mine when I was little wanted to be a model (now she's a large animal vet in harrisonburg) so her mom took her there to get her on TV..... Deal was donate and your kid gets to hold the marva maid milk sign.... a sure camera shot, right!
The other parent later told my mom that it wasn't freaky that they prayed it was what they prayed for..... watch the 700 Club, you'll see what I mean.
Well things just got weirder...... The Jim and Tammy Show morphed into the PTL Club and the 700 Club became more intolerant and the Christian Boardcasting Network (CBN was born.
Patopus founded Regent University and law school, which after how many years(?) is still not accredited. The city of Chesapeake made a deal with them to hire many of their teachers in training. After a while the God Squad started to freak out the locals so much that now chesapeake won't hire from there..... and hampton is reluctant.
What else has he been caught up in?.... Oh, blood diamonds, can't forget that.

A good friend of mine, Lynn, lives in Virginia Beach and is associated with the ARE, Association for Research and Enlightenment, founded by psychic Edgar Cayce. She also went to a Bible college for her undergraduate degree. Back in the 1980s, the 700 Club would routinely have alleged ex-AREers on the show telling everyone that it was satanic, etc. To allow Pat a broader target, they would sometimes call up the public relations department at ARE, where my friend worked at the time, and tell them that if they wanted to send someone over to be on the show and refute what the ex member was saying they could. Because my friend "spoke the language" as it were, she was the one who would get sent over. I know she was on the 700 Club at least 3 times (the only times I ever watched the show) and she did very well in the refuting department, which of course ol' Pat put down to the devil quoting scripture (one of the excuses he used if memory serves).

Anyway, I was down visiting her one weekend and Lynn asked if I wanted to go over and see Pat's place. I said sure, if she was sure that a pagan like me wouldn't cause the alarms to go off. So over we went and I was amazed - all the buildings were huge, brick, Williamsburg colonial style and brand new. The studio, which was what we were visiting, had quite a number of nice antiques in the main lobby, all of which we were told by our guide, were donated to Brother Pat by grateful listeners.

The guy who took our group around was wearing a leisure suit (a good 8 years after they could no longer be found for sale anywhere north of the Florida state line) and carried a large, thick, heavily tabbed Bible. We started our tour in the chapel, "where Brother Pat and Brother Ben (Kinchloe - Pat's sidekick at the time) worship every day" with a prayer. The 7 of us on the tour were encouraged to ask for something. One of the men prayed that his girlfriend would find Jesus by watching Brother Pat. In a move that marked me right off as a trouble maker, I turned to Lynn and whispered that I thought she would do better asking around at Chi Chi's (old chain of quasi-Mexican restaurants).

After the prayer session we toured the building. It had state of the art broadcast facilities and our guide told us, without a trace of irony, that Jesus had told Brother Pat that when He returned He would need such facilities. At that bit of silliness, I almost lost it. But I kept a straight face and proceeded with the tour. It's highpoint, at least to 5 of my fellow tourists, was a visit to the "actual studio where the 700 Club is filmed every day." After all these years I can still remember what our guide said. As Lynn and I walked in, I whispered to her "Do you think we should genuflect?" She gave a brief snort of laughter. At the end of the tour, which included some really bad, maudlin and/or sickly sweet art work, all donated by viewers, our guide hit on us for donations -telling us about the 2 old ladies who had recently driven their old car up to the door of the studio and asked to see Brother Pat because they had a gift for him. Brother Pat of course had the time to see them and they whipped open the trunk of the car, which held several very nice antique pieces of Chinese porcelain and gold coins to be used they told Brother Pat in spreading the Word. I gave $5 so as not to appear rude, but several others on the tour gave much larger sums of money. One of the women put in several $100 bills. We were also encouraged to sign a petition to one of the networks because it was rumored to be considering a sitcom that fall called "Adam and Steve" with the main characters being "gasp" likable homosexuals.

It was an interesting visit. One of these years I may even go back for grins and giggles. A few weeks ago my husband and I were out in Colorado for a wedding and went down to Pike's Peak. Passing through Colorado Springs we saw sign for Focus on the Family. I wanted to go but my husband said we just couldn't expose our 3 year old daughter to it. <Sigh> I know he was right, but I so love touring those places.
