did anybody hear anything about fox reporting about mega-farm cow shit being turned into methane gas, going to "save" oil? The initial report was about 1:00 am, it might not be there now, fox is really different at night.Is this a subversive call to subsidize mega farms? Mr madmom works nights and said he heard this ....was he dreaming? We live in a rural setting and have a mega farm starting not far from us and believe me they ARE full of shit(literally).What will become of it all, they produce tons per acre compared to the family farm that use it themselves for fertilizer. This could really get odorific.What say you?

2. It's for real

I worked with a "mega-farm" that built manure "digesters" that produced methane that:

1. Provided electricity for approximately 60 homes; and,
2. Provided enough methane to power some of the farm's utility vehicles.....

There is a company out of DePere, Wisconsin that goes around the US designing and building these units...I don't know all"numbers" on efficiency but a couple of things were clear from my experience with these guys:

The manure was put to a good use and by the time the "digesting" was done, there were far, far fewer solids being spread on the land.

It needs to be developed more.

I've heard that pig farms can be massive polluters (pigs poop up a storm, apparently). This is a good development - putting what was once pollution to a good use.

The drying process for cow manure was sort of costly but the dried manure was used for several purposes.

It was used as additional bedding for the cows.

Itw was bagged and sold to retail garden stores for small garden use.

And, are you ready for this...sometimes it was mixed back in with the feed for additional bulk feed......

did a really good job of containing odor....you'd be surprised.

Methane is a GHG after all, and it's furthermore useful as fuel.
