1. Yeah right.
He is an unrepentant asshole; even when he does "retract" a statement, he's never truly been sorry.

65. I think Robertson used a version of my letter
on air, and my head is about to explode. Last night, I posted a letter to CBN, and posted a copy to DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=1719323&mesg_id=1722100

Here is a copy of the letter:

Dear Pat

I posted under "other" because you don't have a "political assassination" category. While I have a pretty good idea that Torquemada might support you, and I think George Fox might come down hard on the other side, how about - now this is a tough one - Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Would he agree that its just okey dokey to knock off foreign political leaders we don't like. Remember, he did shift from pacifism to involvement in the planning of the Hitler's death. At the same time, he was a German clergyman who put his own life on the line. While you can use the Beatitudes, you can't rely on the Monroe Doctrine. You may start now.

Today, Robertson opens up by calling on Dietrich Bonhoeffer - it is in at about 4 minutes of the video. Bonhoeffer was truly one of the great, and I am ill about this.

21. Yes They Have
I saw it in the Chicago Tribune this morning a sidebar piece on the jump page of this article. The Robertson story was Page 1, and continued on either 14 or 16. On that page, there was a sidebar of the reactions, which included statements by Rumsfeld and others. He specifically said (i'm quoting from memory) "Our military doesn't do that sort of thing." Another, i forget who, said Robertson is a private citizen who has a right to an opinion, but that the administration does not sanction or approve of his opinion.

We would never stoop that low. We don't need to. We have extremist radical Christian "soldiers" to issue the fatwas for us.

And now, we return you to the regularly scheduled CRUSADE

39. Professor, read the statements very closely, they distance, but don't
condemn. I was struck by that, reading Rumsfelds words yesterday. These evil weasels are always very careful with words, like when Bush said, speaking of Rove, that he wouldn't have anyone guilty of breaking the law working for him, a careful backing off from his earlier statement he would fire a leaker.

41. No Argument
But, the poster said the Bush's haven't said anything about it. Distancing one's self is as close as professional politicans come to condemning. They strongly avoid burning bridges with existing allies. For a Rummy to say anything negative apropos those comments is about as near a condemnation as we're going to see.

40. Here's a quote..
"On Tuesday, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Robertson's comment was "inappropriate" and the United States did not agree with him, but neither he nor anybody else condemned the comment. Both McCormack and Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Robertson was a private citizen stating an opinion.

"We don't consider that it is enough just to say that this is a private citizen with an opinion," Alvarez said."

Like Ambassador Bernado Alvarez says..It's not enough!

19. Exactly
It's not as if he'd been surprised by a reporter and was unexpectedly speaking live on-air; he recorded his screed, as usual, and it was subject to edit and review long before it aired.

To call his explanation "disingenuous" is to miss an opportunity to use the phrase "shameless and unmitigated fucking bullshit."

On assassinations, Rummy said something like, "We don't do that sort of thing, it's illegal." Y'mean, like, oh, I dunno, violating international law by waging a preemptive war against Iraq?

He also said Robertson is a "private citizen" and is entitled to his opinion. I'm a private citizen, but somehow I'm not on TV three times a day offering my opinion to rougly a million people in the U.S. alone. "Private citizen," my ass.

And if he's trying to say that "take him out" doesn't mean kill him, what does he have to say about "You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it." (spoken in the same paragraph as the "take him out" line (which DOES give that line a strongly implied meaning).

61. Bush has given the wingnuts this latitude
Bush continually refers to his election as a mandate. He claims to be "giving the people what they want". And he has repeatedly aligned himself with "people of faith". He has given Robertson, Santorum, DeLay, and the other zealots a forum that more rational conservatives would not have. His father, for example, would not have embraced, literally, people dripping with contempt and hatred for other Americans.
Bush has given these people open season on Americans and the world. He is reaping what he has sown.

The Republicans really do believe that if they lie repeatedly with impunity, that the lie will eventually come true.

Such is the legacy of the Reagan and Bush (I and II) administrations.

68. Why does this sound familiar?
Oh YEAH!! becuase that's the same excuse he used when he got in trouble for "Totally Concurring" with Falwell over 9-11. And When Hurricanes didn't strike disney world down for having Gay days...

The excuse is becoming a bit thin...
