Edited on Wed Aug-24-05 11:03 AM by ZombyWoof
:patriot: Let's lend our support to the UNION.

ALL DUers are welcome to check in, not just union members! :-) The support of fellow progressives is needed and appreciated!

5. I am not a mechanic, or in that union
But I am a lifelong labor supporter with 2 union memberships under my belt, and I feel it is crucial we remember our roots as Democrats. :toast:

6. These union workers need support
I am no longer in a union but my daddy taught me the union lessons, I have worked in a union and I even now in management, remember those union values and the history of the labor movement.
This country needs another labor movement to set thing back on course.

7. Count me. Plus a question.
Question as to crossing picket lines:

If one flies on a different airline (i.e. not Northwest) during the strike, is this considered "crossing the picket line"? Are you supposed to boycott/avoid all cometitors during the strike, or only the airline being picketed? I assume it's OK to use a different airline, but am not sure.

Mostly.

10. Generally, just boycott the company in question
So other airlines would be okay - as of now the union mechanics working for other airlines have no contract disputes with management. The real disappointment (and one of the reasons unions are imperiled these days) is that the Northwest pilots and flight attendants have no balls, and are not joining the mechanics on the other side of the picket line.

8. What are the issues in this strike? I really don't know.
I'm generally supportive of unions, though they have been largely ineffectual here in the south.

20. Among other things a 25% pay cut
And the laying off of 1200 workers permanently. And outsourcing aircraft maintenance to Asia.

But the execs have taken no cuts, nor have they reduced their numbers. As usual in matters like this.

9. sorry...i always support "unions"...
and am a 20+ yr union member.

but i know the history of amfa...well.

i know that they won't call themselves a union...because "we are an ASSOCIATION, not a union"

i know that their philosophy is "fuck the other crafts and trades, we don't need 'em"...and now they are crawling to the other crafts saying "now, ya' know, we all need to stick together on this"

i'll also tell you what i believe, but don't _KNOW_...that the goal of the top leadership of amfa is to bust and destroy every union in the aircraft maintenance field, and to alienate all of the workers in this field from ever organizing again. and they are doing a damn fine job of it too.

yeah, i'm all too familiar with amfa.

11. Hang in there, mechanics. Our very lives depend on you guys
every day and don't think we don't know it. Maybe DU should start a campaign for donations to help these guys out.

14. Fire one $10 million/year overpaid exec...
then retain about 500 mechanics.

Sounds like a bargain to ME.

line. I do have a lot of problems with union leadership, however.

19. I'm in... I will NEVER choose convenience over my fellow laborers
Unions are in my blood. I was raised in a union household, in a heavily union area in the L.A. Harbor. It's just the way I am.

ALL unions have my support.... well, the teamsters not so much as they're corrupt  I am smart enough to know there are some union leaderships that are as corrupt as some corporations.
