Another reason to party in New Orleans
The BRAC commission has taken the Naval Support Activity off the closure list. And the Marines will be staying in the Big Easy. Just what the city that care forgot needs, another reason to party.

1. Congratulations to New Orleans! We didn't fare so well here in Athens, GA

We are losing the US Naval Supply Corps School. :( :(

Republican developers and bankers (who hate "liberal" Athens-Clarke County and our wonderful Democratic woman mayor, Heidi Davison) are circling like the vultures that they are, waiting and hoping to rape and pillage the historic old campus and buildings and huge trees. I pray that the land is not sold to the private sector.

2. I see where NAS Atlanta is on the closure list
I was stationed there in the Mid-90's and we went through the BRAC process then. I get a very nostalgic-based pain the gut when I know one of my old duty stations is closing down. I was stationed in Philadelphia in the 80's and that base is no more. I've sent a many young Supply Corps Officer to Athens. A beautiful spot of geography if there ever was one. I guess I'm just a wee bit dense but I don't understand all this closing frenzy. I may have to visit NAS Atlanta before they lock up the gate for good. That shouldn't happen for a few years though.

I'm thinking of pulling up all my Impatiens and replacing them with Marigolds for the rest of the season. We won't (shouldn't) get a frost until Thanksgiving or later. Godawful hot here the past couple of weeks. We got a monster Sun Coleous on the Patio, its beautiful. I soak it every morning and its hanging in there in the intense heat.

3. I think the base closing frenzy has two purposes:
1: To hurt Democratic/Blue cities and counties and 2: to (attempt) to make public land available for private redevelopment by Republican developers.

It has been beyond hot here. Last Saturday and Sunday, the heat index was from 105 degrees to 110 degrees. :( At 7:30 am Sunday morning it was already 76 degrees and 87% humidity. We stayed inside until night and then swam in our pool after dark.

My Ageratum has grown like a weed due to all of the rain. I have liriope, pale pink roses and sunflowers blooming! It was too hot this weekend to work on pruning the shrubs in the (west facing) front yard. It rained on Monday night and it is now much cooler. :)

Marigolds will be perfect! I just love them. They are such happy and sunny flowers. :hi:

4. We have Liriope
around our Camellias out front. They are blooming now. I cut them down as far as I can in February and they come back beautiful every year. I've failed miserably with roses in the past, I don't even try them anymore. Haven't found any Marigold yet but I'll keep hunting.
