It starts with a little arbitrary imprisonment without charges, indefinitely. Bringing us to, oh, back before the Magna Carta and King John in the 1200's when habeas corpus was established as a fundamental tenet of Western law.
Torture's okay again too. Heck, as long as ONE American life even might be saved, I guess it's okay kidnap, rape, beat, chew holes out of with dogs. We do it there so they won't be doing it in Shaker Heights or Grosse Point or Rancho Palos Verdes.
Assassination's all good. Don't like the leader of some pissant country that they chose to elect? Looks at you the wrong way? We have ways of "taking care" of that, heh. We'll scold the dude who talked about that with one side of the mouth, and with the other we'll have a bunch of talk show wisdom representing "both sides" of the "is torture and assassination okay" debate. Because we want to be fair and balanced after all.
It's fun sliding down the slippery slope. Gets faster and faster the further down you go. Wheee! Ultimately, it's liberating. There's really no limits! Throwing babies onto spikes in front of their moms? Well, as long as ONE American life MIGHT.. oh you know the rest. How low can you go?
