1. Everybody get GnuPG

Gnu Privacy Guard is robust cryptography for the common man (and woman). It uses steel hard public key crypto to ensure private communications. It is doubtful anything short of a *significant* effort by a *significant* organization can break the crypto. It is not realistic that even NSC could mount an effort to break wide-spread use of such strong cryptographic communications.

Public Key Crypto uses a key pair, one private, one public which are related by an extremely complex algorithm which works one direction only (the trap door algorithm). You share the public key with the world and keep the private key secure. Communications to you from outside are encrypted with your public key can *only* be decrypted by your private key. Communications from you to outside are encrypted with your private key and can *only* be decrypted by your public key.

This is secure stuff. Up until Clinton withdrew the restrictions, these programs were considered a munition by the DOD and were under export restrictions. Of course, the code was readily available outside the US; the restrictions only restricted its access from US-based Net sites.
