DLC Helps Spread Claim That "Progressives Destroyed America"
Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 05:55 AM by Jon8503
There is a case to be made that Democrats should go on Fox News, even if it is a right-wing network, because the network blasts its content to the general public. But there is no case to be made that any non-right-wing lunatic should take part in an event at the fringe-conservative Heritage Foundation entitled "Did the Progressives Destroy America?" Unlike a Fox News show where you are speaking to potentially swing voters, there is no "general public" audience at this event - it is an event designed to perpetuate among the Washington, D.C. insider establishment the worst right-wing dishonesty. Any participation by our side helps legitimize this nonsense. Yet, incredibly, the Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) is headlining the event.

That's right, Will Marshall - President of the DLC's Orwellian-labeled "Progressive Policy Institute" - is lending his name to the event and taking part. I guess we shouldn't be surprised - this is the same Will Marshall who calls Iraq War critics "anti-American." Sure, Marshall will disingenuously argue that he will be speaking at the event to "debate" the issue. But he's been in Washington long enough to know exactly what he's doing: deliberately helping to legitimize the worst right-wing lies. If there was ever a question as to whether the DLC is actively trying to undermine Democrats and the progressive movement in general, there shouldn't be anymore. The answer is, yes they are.

19. Now, You're Catching On!
Evil gov't programs that helped middle class and poor people ruined everything.

You're gonna have to work on that list though. It's kind of short.

30. Yeah, Let's Bring Back Those Good 'Ol Days
You know, the ones before womenfolk could think in public, and rich people could abuse poor ones and get away with it, and we didn't have to have minorities thinking they were actual people.

Of course, i'm being satiric, but there are those who vote for dimwits like Silverspoon who think this way. I live two doors down from one. And get this: His family are all dem activists and three relatives are in office as Dems. So, he votes for all Dems, EXCEPT FOR PRESIDENT, because the Republicans can maintain control over all the change the dems keep wanting.

What a tool!

3. Will Marshall is PNAC to the core
Google "Will Marshall" PNAC and you will find all kinds of interesting material.

http://rightweb.irc-online.org/ind/marshall/marshall.php

Marshall was one of 15 analysts who wrote the Progressive Policy Institute's foreign policy blueprint, "Progressive Internationalism: A Democratic National Security Strategy". (2) Using language that mirrors that of the neoconservative Project for the New American Century (PNAC), in October 2003 PPI hailed the "tough-minded internationalism" of past Democratic presidents such as Harry Truman. Like PNAC, which warned of the present danger in its founding documents, the Progressive Policy Institute declared that "America is threatened once again" and needs assertive individuals committed to strong leadership. Its observation--"like the cold war, the struggle we face today is likely to last not years but decades"--mirrors both neoconservative and Bush administration national security assessments. In its words, PPI endorsed the invasion of Iraq, "because the previous policy of containment was failing," and Saddam Hussein's government was "undermining both collective security and international law."

This one flavored to appeal to the DLC's conservative Dixicrat roots.

5. The case grows daily for a populist progressive party!
Lets see, MIA on Cindy, simply countermanding the people's wishes on the war, ignoring the plight of the working person, the list is long and tawdry.

Perhaps the time has come?

btw, the DLC sux!

8. It was the complicit media that pushed this lie..
Edited on Thu Aug-25-05 07:13 AM by annabanana
They harped on the most unattractive aspects of "identity politics" and never, ever, ever covered the meat and potatoes of the progressive agenda. America, which knows only what it is shown rejected what they were seeing, not knowing that there was a BABY in that bathwater.

This is the central lie that the DLC is based on. Sadly, enough people bought the lie to let them get the reins of the party.

20. You have that exactly right, annabanana!
The media acted as if feminism was ONLY about abortion, as if racial equality was ONLY about busing, as if unions were ALL about trying to get high pay for no work.

What progressives actually advocate and the media caricature of their possessions are two different things.

34. The Sirota article fabricated spin.
All he does is say Will Marshall is participating in this debate, so his "real" intentions are (fill in whatever Sirota wants them to be). That's lame, and anyone looking at this objectively would raise an eyebrow at this tactic. It's a shame that we now have people within our party wanting to foist this kind of junk on other people within our party. We are going to lose for the next eight years or more, I'd guess.

'92 Ross Perot elected Clinton
'96 The repugs ran a corpse against a booming economy
'00 DLC backed Gore lost what should have been a cakewalk
'02 DLC inspired candidates lost everywhere
'04 DLC play it safe candidate Kerry lost to an inarticulate boob.

What a record.
