MONTREAL (CP) - RCMP and city police swooped down on several companies in Montreal and Toronto on Thursday morning as part of a major investigation into fraud allegations against Norbourg Asset Management Inc.

The provincial regulatory body for Quebec's financial sector ordered Norbourg to stop all activities and froze its assets and bank accounts.

The Autorite des marches financiers said it will investigate a number of issues, including a difference of $70.7 million between the company's latest financial results and its assets under management, and allegations that annual financial reports for the last three years were misleading or false.

Authorities will also investigate the alleged misappropriation of $69.8 million belonging to Evolution and Norbourg funds and the alleged falsification of documents for Norbourg's operations.

More than 100 people, including locksmiths and 30 police, were involved in the raids, an RCMP spokesman said.

Cpl. Patrice Gelinas said search warrants were issued for two businesses in Montreal, three in the city's south shore area and one in Toronto. The raids were part of an investigation that begin in June, Gelinas said.
