I Don't Feel Rich "High-End" Or "Affluent" Enough To Watch This Show

As TVNewser reported last month, CNBC is preparing to launch "High Net Worth," a Sunday evening business show for "high-end world." It will launch September 18 at 8pm and be hosted by Tyler Mathisen, the network announced yesterday.

I love the press release: It describes how the show will report the headlines that "affect America's affluent" and "celebrate the very best life has to offer, from exclusive golf resorts and elite boutique hotels to incredible real estate and choice art." Oh, and don't forget: "Mathisen will also give a look ahead to what's happening in the high-end world in the coming week, from policy changes to polo matches."

Policy changes and polo matches. The show is sponsored by OppenheimerFunds Inc. and Occidental Petroleum Corporation...

3. I Expect This is "Aspirational Marketing"

(if that's a correct use of the term). I don't expect this show is being aired for the truly affluent, but for those who envy them or would like to get rich themselves. AFAIC, even if I had a lot more money this show wouldn't interest me.

Marketers define affluency as starting around $90,000/yr - an income that's not at all unusual among many professionals. They may aspire to earn $250,000, but they already have enough income for investment, travel and high-end goods and services.

With the gulf growing between the wealthy and the impoverished, and more millionaires being created every year, the 'luxe' industry is busy churning out products that will make these ever-so-special consumers feel even more privileged and protected from the masses. For instance, private ATMs and first-class-only airline flights. It's great, isn't it? :eyes:

I wouldn't think a lifestyle of luxury starts at that level, but some people either retired, childless, or just spendthrifts. Or spending in anticipation of becoming affluent.

I confess to reading the occasional yachting magazine--not because I have a wish to buy a yacht, but just to stare in bemusement at the conspicuous consumption.

I suspect that if the Nazarene were to take up boating today, at most He'd go for a modest cabin cruiser.
