Free State Project
We need to watch these folks - http://www.freestateproject.org

This was just discussed on Cspan, they will announce the state today, it will be covered at11 AM by Cspan.

These folks sound like a group of libertarians who want to deregulate states, starting with one.

Oddly when I first joined DU I thought it would be great to start some liberal communes in some sparsely populated red states out west.

1. I'm pretty confident
they won't choose Vermont. The Northeast Kingdom (where I live) is one of the areas in the running. But if they do choose it, fine. I'm not terribly worried.

2. What a bunch of weirdos
What a bunch of weirdos. They want to do away with states? That's like re-making an entirely new constitution. In actuality, it's an entirely new political philosophy on par with communism and capitalism. No, it would never work and no one would buy it.

4. I'll gleefully let them have...
North Dakota! I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, but the nation wouldn't miss a thing if it were gone!

5. Idaho?
Certainly it will be a western state.

Libertarianism might work on a small scale like a county or a small rural state where there is little industry, little wealth and little poverty, but we all know that if the U.S. were to become a Libertarian country, the corporations would pick this country clean, and we would eventually become another banana republic - high unemployment, sweat shops, very low wages, and health care for only the few that could afford it.

7. They picked New Hampshire
That whole "Live Free or Die" motto must have attracted them. No thanks. I'll take free healthcare and firearm-free schools any day.

8. The Constitution
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 09:01 AM by Samaka 3ajiba
The Constitution has been changed and amended to oblivion with corporations now enjoying the same rights as citizens (if not more), the PATRIOT Act...etc. I don't see how this project is going to affect anything.

I also don't see how Libertarians can really do any more damage than what his been done already by both major parties.

Its an interesting experiment. I wonder if there is a legal Constitutional mechanism that allows a state to succede from the Union?
