5. I ranked it and have previously ranked the older entries on BBV
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 11:19 AM by Robbien
If I remember correctly, one of the requests for action on BBV have over two hundred votes. We need to keep this new request ranked high and maybe enter a new request every week until move-on gets the hint.

12. I've spoken to MoveOn about getting involved in Citizen Exit Polling.
Also Dean has stated that he would like to see Exit Pollers at election precincts.
If we cannot achieve election reform in time we diffenitiely need, at the very least observers observing the media polling.
Terry McCaulif(whatever) has also stated that observers would be at every precinct in Florida.

15. Just got off the phone in a LONG conversation with some powerhitters
Edited on Wed Oct-01-03 03:19 PM by BevHarris
I agree with Eloriel, everyone jump in from the grass roots level and push this issue -- at the same time, I'll see what I can do in an upcoming meeting with some of those who push the buttons.

Also, I'd like to encourage everyone to get the (preannouncement) word out that a forum through BBV will enable live, real-time logging of every single problem a voter wants to submit for the California election next Tuesday. If I can achieve it, I'll have this going by Monday, along with appropriate press announcements.

Did something like this last November in connection with VoteWatch. It's great -- citizen posts complaint like "hey, here in Watts our polling place hasn't opened and it's 9:30 a.m." -- then we immediately shoot an email, and call, TV cameras and get them over there asking questions, and we send the announcement on the problem to radio and newspapers.

We verify first, call the citizen who reported it, make sure the problem is legit, then get them on it. This will help speed response to minority areas who are getting disenfranchised, and will ID problems right away and get them into the hands of the press.

Problem is, last time the forum got trolled to death and for hours at a time, had DoS attacks. This time we'll control it and see about getting better mirrors.

20. Wonderful idea Bev!
I'll borrow one if need be.
We were just looking to shoot some backgrounders and perhaps a few interviews with voters who used the new Diebold machines to ask them how it feels not knowing if their votes were being counted as they cast them.
This could be a lot more fun! :)

32. Their problem is the accessibility issue of touchscreens for
disabled Americans. HAVA pushes that issue, and the disabled community LOVES touchscreens (and I understand that -- but it won't have gained them much if we ALL lose our votes in the process).

The ITAA lobbied hard for HAVA with its disabled access provisions, but I doubt there was any altruism involved, based on the revelation in the conference call David attended wherein the head ITAA honcho on the call admitted that their task force was "just to get Congress" to pour money into the industry.

In short, IMO the disabled have been used. Yes, with touchscreens they gain some dignity and privacy that weren't there before but ... well everyone here knows the routine on what the potential (and actual) losses for ALL, including the disabled, are and will be.

Eloriel

Thanks for this initiative. I think this is a good issue for moveon, apart from the merits, because it is goes to the heart of the defense of democracy that formed the foundation of its initial success during the anti-Clinton coup attempt. It is not a "partisan politics" thing, but something every self-respecting citizen should endorse.

(edit: oops, I intended this as a response to the original post, but worse things have happened....)

34. So I went to my monthly meeting of our local Democratic club.
I was talking to some of the ladies at my table about the BBV. They thought that what I said was incredulous and that they never had a problem with their votes. I told them about the SLO (our county) calling home incidence. They asked me where I got the information and I told them truthfully on the internet. Then they said, "And you believe it?" I said that the proof was compelling, however, then the meeting started and I couldn't finish the conversation. I think this will be a hard sell.

Do you have any suggestions about how to broach this without sounding too flaky?

36. You did well -- here's a way around that in the future
people are suspicious of the Internet (though that's where the best investigative reporting is done, we all know there's a lot of crap on the internet too). So on the SLO story you could say "I'm amazed you didn't hear about this -- it was covered by the AP Wire Service, and by CNN. (Okay, it was CNN online page, but that's still CNN).

That's why, when a story grabs your attention, it's a great idea to mentally bookmark the press that covered it. AP Wire has covered a lot, and you can also pick one of the media outlets that picked up their story. For example, AP Wire covered Dan Spillane's lawsuit, and I believe the Washington Post was one of the media outlets that picked it up. In that case I'd say "You're kidding! This was covered in the Washington Post!"

Sadly, our media is not doing a good job, but many of these stories are indeed making it into the mainstream press, and that's an easy sell.

35. what about the Deibold machines in place for Ahhhnold?
regarding the recall in california oct 7--

they are advertising on the radio and suggesting to use the many touch screens that are in place and not the regular voting machines.

Any thoughts on the recall and the California frigging in the riggin?

37. Are you serious? They have ads on the radio to use the touch screens?
Now there's a first! There are several great activism ideas for California voting machines -- wish me luck on the transfer of the BBV.org forums shortly.

Some of these need to be discussed privately, but you do know that Paranoid Pat will be out filming the ruckus, and (fingers crossed) we'll have a live voting problem reporting forum going, which should see a lot of action.

(Has anyone heard from my publisher? I'm getting worried about him -- hoped to have three more chapters up tonight).

39. yes it's true
Heard it today again and they gave a long list of addresses for the "modern" touch screen voting machine locations.

This election is also changing alot of the normal poll locations and many people may not know where they are supposed to go.

Thanks for all you are doing !

41. Radio ads for Touch Screens
Could someone in the local area call the stations you hear broadcast the ads and ask them who paid to put those on the air?

The answer might be an ad agency but that's a start in tracking this down.

If it's the vendors, I don't think we're they're being "proper" here. If it's government, same deal and they may become liable for a bunch more than they are now.

Or, a political party....
