US civil rights activist Jesse Jacksonwill reportedly begin a three-day visit to Venezuela on Saturday, to meet President Hugo Chavez, politicians and community leaders. Jackson and his delegation will meet Chavez, Venezuelan religious leaders and will attend a special session of Venezuela's National Assembly convened Sunday.
Jackson will also meet leaders of African-descended communities in Caracas, the ABN state news agency said.On Monday, Jackson travels to Barlovento, 40 kilometers (25 miles) northeast of Caracas, to meet with members of the African-Venezuelan community.
Jackson's visit comes just days after conservative US preacher Pat Robertson said on his television show, "The 700 Club," that Chavez should be killed.
"I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it," he said on Monday.Robertson apologized Wednesday for the comments.
Chavez, a twice-elected leftist and close ally of Cuban President
Fidel Castro, has often said Washington would like to assassinate him, and accuses the Bush administration of involvement in a coup d'etat that toppled him for 47 hours in April 2002. Jackson's visit coincides with the arrival of Organization of American States secretary general Jose Miguel Insulza, as well as representatives and ministers of the OAS, who will take part in negotiations August 28-29 to draft an OAS Social Charter.
