I think it would be right to take a moment in this whole media maelstrom and recognize what Cindy has sacrificed to give a face and a voice to a feeling about which so many of us feel passionately:
- she lost her son - she lost her anonymity - she's been the target of some of the most cruel and vicious smears I've ever heard. All's fair in politics, sure....but when was the last time you heard of an organized effort against A MOTHER WHO LOST HER SON - her mother suffered a stroke - her husband saw fit to serve her with divorce papers in the midst of this - her in-laws prop up the right-wing attack against her - fellow parents who've lost children in the war pretend to sympathize, but go on all the right-wing shows and smear her.
She must feel pretty alone and despondent sometimes....I can't even imagine what pain she must feel everytime some stranger cavalierly proclaims that her dead son must be ashamed of what she's doing.
Yet she perseveres....she's back in camp and she looks to be in great spirits. This has been an overwhelming month for her...I guess I just want to say thank you Mrs. Sheehan. Thank you so much for your strength, your resolve, your courage and your pain. You've endured so much more than any decent person should and still you fight the good fight.
You've got more balls and more steel than anyone I ever heard of.
