2. I thought the US peaked in the early 1970s.
Is it not profitable to pump out of those wells?

Are they still viable?!

Or is "peak oil" a joke aimed at us to induce depression and suicide?

3. The U.S. still produces about 45% of its own oil.
Peak oil doesn't mean all the oil wells suddenly go dry all at once. It just means that we want to use it faster than we pump it.

Or for Valero's refineries anyways.

http://www.valero.com/Visit+Our+Refineries/

Seems to me that they have capacity for about 300,000 barrels per day sitting in the path of the storm.

7. The delay depends on how long it takes to transport it.
Moving a tanker from Saudi Arabia to the U.S. takes much longer than moving gasoline between states. Plus not only will the gulf get hit, the onshore refineries will too. Double whammy. :(

31. Well, yeah
But since gasoline futures means that prices in the future will be going up, gas stations will raise prices now

(much like how * has to deal with Iran now as they'll have nukular weapons capability 10 years from now)

10. Jeeze Louise!
Any way it goes, this storm is going to whack us.

If it keeps to its present course, it hits several oil rigs AND New Orleans.

Veer to the west, and it could wallop twice as many rigs, and still hit New Orleans pretty hard.

Veer to the east, and it plows into another crop of oil rigs.

It looks like if it doesn't radically veer toward the west by mid-day tomorrow, there's going to be a lot of damage to take care of on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Not only could this be a strong storm, it could be an expensive one.

18. Why should we pay for some fucking oil rigs?
I know gas prices are going up, but they went up last year on "futures", this is the future, gas companies can pay to have their privately and independently owned rigs replaced.

12. I don't think I want to know what is going to happen to it.
We just gotta hope that Hurricane blows a little further east or west rather than taking those rigs on with a direct hit.

14. There are many reasons for prices to go up...
...but few reasons for prices to come down.

We are riding the greased rails to hell as our leaders smile about their "profits" and scream "Faster! Faster!"

34. B-I-N-G-O!
I do believe that is the whole point for the war in Iraq, and I have good reasons to feel that way. I can imagine that W might have turned to his "advisors" (I use the term loosely) as the war keeps going badly and asked them if we can't consider winding it all down soon, what with the American people slowly but surely withdrawing their support.

And I can imagine those "advisors" answering, "NO! We can't just bring the troops home! They're doing important work to keep Big Oil happy -- and your backing is from Big Oil. You'd better not piss THOSE GUYS off by bringing troops home!"

Sad, sad, sad. But have we contributed to this problem by blindly believing we can keep using up fossil fuels endlessly? I do wonder why on earth folks who KNOW fossil fuel resources are *finite* as well as harmful to the environment haven't cried out against their use more loudly and for longer than they have. People need to be educated, to understand just what's at stake and how wrong it is to blithely continue using fossil fuels for our energy needs.

We're fighting over the last of dwindling crude oil and natural gas resources on the planet and in very volatile regions like the Middle East when what we should be doing is mounting a "Manhattan Project" type venture to develop OTHER -- RENEWABLE -- energy resources.

Just my opinion, but I never have gotten a sufficiently sensible answer from anyone on these issues....

17. THANKS for this link, Junkdrawer!
More good info there, and yet more info and comments on another thread begun yesterday (Sat) a.m., here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=1731223

I'm listening to TWC, plus glearning Katrina news from the three news networks, and just saw a report on (argh!) Faux about the refinery and processing plants onshore that are definitely gonna take a major hit.

Pascagoula, they said, will get it hard and early. They also mentioned that 25% of the crude and natural gas Americans use comes from this region, and that all production in the area has been stopped since yesterday or the day before.

I'm definitely for caring about the PEOPLE before the "facilities," but having so much damage in this particular region will be affecting an awful LOT of us before this is over. :hide: :yoiks:

20. Going after one tank strikes me futile.
One tank might last people one commuting week or less.

The damage this storm is going to do could, and probably will, mean a disruption of months.
