2. Hilarious!
Cindy was on wbai just now, and said that busload after busload are coming-she's greeting them-there's about a 1000 there now. The radio guy said that the rw is saying 3000 will be there for the anti-Cindy rally; Cindy said that she'd heard they were expecting 200!

9. Modem Butterfly asked a couple of weeks ago
..if there was a more inclusive monument/memorial that could be set up after the crosses had been moved down by the psycho freep. She was told by Will Pitt that there are stars of David and crescent moons as well. I've just blown that picture way way up and can't see anything but crosses. At the time I thought ModemButterfly had an excellent point until Will claimed the faiths of all that have been killed were represented. I assumed that these symbols were of a number that reflected the numbers of killed as well. After seeing this picture I have a couple of questions and think Modem might have been on the money with her request.

1) Is there anything other than crosses in this memorial that I can't see?

2) What symbol is being used for atheists or agnostics and how is the faith of the dead soldiers being determined?

3) Are the crosses representative of Christians killed in this war against radical Islam?

4) Does it matter how that photo might be interpreted in the Muslim world regardless of the intentions of Cindy's righteous cause?

11. that's a very touching pic...
but not only is it not from the new memorial it doesn't answer any of my questions.

The link below "more here" has no more pictures of Stars of David or crescent moons.

Sheehan has been called anti-Semitic and this war has been called a crusade. Does any of this matter?

13. Cindy has been called anti-Semitic because she once stated that she
thought Israel should get out of Palestine. But, as Jewish DU'ers have posted, questioning the Israeli government does not make one anti-Semitic.

I've seen Freepers claim that ALL Liberals are anti-Semitic. It's all just spin.

Welcome to DU!

19. Who The Hell Put Me In Charge of Answering Such Irrelevant Objections?
You come out of the woodwork with a tone that is hostile and a list of questions you DEMAND I answer. Bull. I do not answer to you. I do not speak for the people that set up the memorial.

Give me a single reason I should give a crap about this "odd and misplaced" flame-out/thread-jacking. Your hostile and needlessly aggressive tone indeed does smell off to me.

Your opinion of my bravery or lack thereof is at best a total irrlevancy...

21. well lets see.
You posted the original picture. You replied to my post with a questionable picture and a bogus link to back up your answer, therefore you have some responsibility I would think to answer at least why the link to more pictures had none.

There is your single reason. As for the rest of your post...

This is not thread jacking unless all you want is people to tell you how clever and creative you are. I am not hostile at all, I read Modembutterfly's post the other day and as an atheist I agreed. How am I aggressive? Is this what you call aggressive? Is asking questions about the optics at camp Casey aggressive? Do you not want to change minds? Are you nothing more than a cheerleader?

Should I start a thread on the subject instead of sullying your thread with uncomfortable questions about inclusiveness and religious tolerance?

27. I hAve Made It Quite Clear That Your Tone And Demands For Answers
from a guy that went there and took pics of a memorial someone else set up was both odd and misplaced. Feel free to read the tone of the rest of the comments on the thread and see why wold I say something like that.

You act like you are worried about inclusiveness and you roll in with nothing but criticism of the memorial Cindy and her people put up and how it might be perceived in a climate of American torture photos in litigation? By extension you imply that the decisions she has made may be taken the wrong way. Cindy bashing.

If you were as worried about appearances as you try to appear to be, you could have asked those questions politely. Without the demands that I answer you or face your charges of cowardice.

You legitimately want information from me in the future, be polite.

Otherwise, you will keep getting the cold shoulder.

30. What?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=4473120&mesg_id=4473335

When I asked the question I was polite. You are the one that call my questions Odd, Misplaced, and smelling funny.

You were rude.

Cindy is up against Leo Burnet and his ilk when creating images and themes that resonate with American people and the world. She needs as much help as she can get.

"By extension you imply that the decisions she has made may be taken the wrong way. Cindy bashing."

Please reread that line you just posted. That is totally asinine.

It's that 'love it or leave' it type response that I'm talking about.

33. I Know Full What You Have Written. It Still Smells Funny To Me.
I love those that repeat the charges from the right while shouting I am just trying to warn you all of what they are saying always smell funny to me.

Why didn't I hear anyone down there repeating these talking points down there and worrying about them? In what way does my opinion or yours on this issue change a thing on the ground or in the photos I have taken? SHould I stop showing the pics for the sake of Appearances in the Muslim world?

This appeared in a Kuwaiti source. Should I ask them to retract it?

Just wondering why you approach me like this? Shouting Coward if I do not debunk for the 100th time these same old talking points?

I think it is clear what is up...

22. Let Me Take A Crack At These Asinine Complaints For Kicks...
Edited on Sat Aug-27-05 07:25 PM by DistressedAmerican
1) Is there anything other than crosses in this memorial that I can't see?

The crosses that were mowed down at the first site are back up. they include as previously noted by Will and Myself markers of differing faith:

The shot on this thread is camp 2 and to the best of my recollection, it was all crosses. I do know that the military has a tombstone with an atom on it for the designation. No, I didn't see any of those.

2) What symbol is being used for atheists or agnostics and how is the faith of the dead soldiers being determined?

I saw nothing to indicate atheists. I myself am one and could care less. I have no idea how the determinations are being made. Feel free to contact the peace house yourself and ask.

3) Are the crosses representative of Christians killed in this war against radical Islam?

No the crosses represent soldiers killed in George Bush's War in Iraq. The ones sent there to disarm Saddam of thousands of liters of chemical and biological weapons. The ones that found no WMD and are left there with no clear mission.

4) Does it matter how that photo might be interpreted in the Muslim world regardless of the intentions of Cindy's righteous cause?

I worry a hell of a lot more about these:

These are the pictures and actions that are making us despised around the world. Not shots of the protesters that are trying to stop this kind of violence.

24. Thank you
I agree that the torture pics are not only abhorrent they indeed have sown disastrous seeds for our future generations. However, how Muslims around the world see the protestors will go a long way to helping them determine the sincerity of the sorrow felt by Americans for what they have allowed to happen to innocents.

This is Camp CASEY after all not Camp Murdered Muslims.

"Let Me Take A Crack At These Asinine Complaints For Kicks..."

Spare me the self absorbed righteousness, you could have answered the questions simply without looking childish and petty.

36. Another crack
Crosses are not necessarily Christian. There was another thread last week (or so) where your question was addressed. I did a search, but could not find it, so I went google shopping. The previous poster was much more eloquent and also found something about the four corners of the cross representing direction.

************

The cross, as a basic design motif, appears in the pottery, weaving, carving, and painting of many cultures. It may be simply decorative, or it may have symbolic meaning. The tau cross, for example, was a symbol of life to the ancient Egyptians; when combined with the circle (as in the crux ansata), it stood for eternity (see Egyptian Art and Architecture). For most ancient peoples the Greek cross was a metaphor for the four indestructible elements of creation (air, earth, fire, and water), thus symbolizing permanence. The swastika, with the ends of its cross bars bent to the right, was common in both the Old World and the New World. It originally represented the revolving sun, fire, or life and later, by extension, good luck. To Buddhists, a swastika represented resignation; to the Jains, it symbolized their seventh saint. To Hindus, a swastika with arms bent to the left symbolized night, magic, and the destructive goddess Kali. In mid-20th-century Germany, the right-facing swastika was the Nazi party emblem (see Buddhism; Jainism; Hinduism; National Socialism).
