What Power Or Group Is Capable Of Taking On Big Oil?

now most DU'ers would agree that the Petroleum Industry pretty much controls our government and how the entire country operates. From how we fuel our transportation on all levels and heat our homes etc.

We'd probably agree that Petroleum has lied to the public and has thrown obstacles in the path of Green Technology.

My question:

Who can take on Petroleum?

Is it impossible to educate American citizens/consumers?

What 'endgame' do you think Petroleum has in mind as Peak Oil looms in the near future?

My guess is that their arsenal of alternative energy patents/etc. will get rolled out, but only for the rich. Everyone else will be slave labor in Guantanamo-like prison camps.

and in our selfish materialistic culture, it's a way-uphill battle to roust anyone from their comfy lifestyle in the way the colonists of 1770s were able to boycott overtaxed British goods.
Ya gotta hit 'em in the wallets and share-prices, and I see no signs of our country having the discipline to resist our retail impulses...just look at the percentage of people's spending vs savings. We're all mortgaged to big oil, in some way or other, through our bloated dependency on toys and status. Much "wailing and gnashing of teeth," but no one wants to make the hard choices. We've been freed of the concept of sacrifice, and now are trapped in our own gilded cage.
