1. A note from the front line
In Karbala there was no infrastructure. The first thing we wanted to do was restore law and order. We established a police department.

By American standards the quality of the police would be low, but compared to what it was before we got there they had a standard. They established a training academy for the police department to give people some training. They also put these people in uniform so they’d have a certain amount of pride about what they were doing. They also worked with them, actually had them out dispersing crowds on a couple of occasions. Had them doing police work. This is something that was unheard of. Before the police did very little. If there was a crime committed you would go to the police station the policeman would be dispatched to the site of the crime. He would write a report and simply take it back to the police station and the investigation would be done by the magistrates. Now they have a police department doing things similar to what our police departments are doing.

There was also no fire department when we got there, or no operating fire department. They did have two fire stations in the city, they did have fire trucks but nobody was being paid to do anything. One of our young NCOs, name of Eric Burian worked with the fire department to establish a hierarchy there and found out who had training and who did not and working with each other until they did establish a fire department. A working fire department.

There were also certain repairs that had to be done. We made arrangements to get some of them done so some of these people could work. On one occasion we had a fire on a pipeline. A pretty bad fire. The fire department got out there and it was beyond what they could do, but the fire chief got a hold of his superiors in Baghdad and made arrangements to get equipment down there and within 48 hours they had this thing put out, a very, very big fire.

Hospitals when we got there were practically non functional. Public health nurse, Maj. Reehtof-Bowers, did assessments on these and determined a certain amount of projects that could be done. They did open an ER at the general hospital to provide a certain amount of equipment for general hospital use. Some simple things these people didn’t have, like wheelchairs, were brought in. I understand this was also done down in al Hila by Capt. Finamore.

There were assessments also to be made on some clinics around the area. We had to travel out into the countryside to do this, usually with an armed escort. The people there had nothing. Absolutely nothing. We were at one point even giving them some of the medical supplies we had for our own use because they had nothing. We had an excess so we provided it to them and they were very grateful. They were just happy to have anything. Things like 4X4 gauze pads, tape, disinfectants.

4. I think you replied to the wrong post.
But if you are really there, why are the police asking for bribes and shooting at Iraqi's who want to apply for jobs?

5. Oh, so NOW Rush wants to play the 1st Amendment Card.
How convenient.

Where was Rush, when we and notable celebrities were fighting for our rights to free speech during the build-up to the war with Iraq?

Yes, Rush, we do have freedom of speech in this country. We do not, however, have freedom to remain gainfully employed by ESPN. You tried to ruin the careers of many anti-war celebrities last spring, now it's your turn.

Suck it up, buddy.

7. RUSH.... I HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH... BUT YOU WHINERS... DON'T
Isn't that the message.

Not an uncommon one these days for folks defending their obnoxious statements (often bigoted/sexist/homophobic) cry "FREE SPEECH" when someone criticizes what they say. See THEY get free speech - but YOU aren't supposed to complain because YOU don't have free speech.

It is sad to see the Constitution cheapened as a justification (and attempt to shout down/shut up others) for folks' expressing their basest attitudeds.

9. The First Amendment only protects against
civil litigation and criminal prosecution. It has no guarantees on what it will do for your social life, nor your t.v. ratings. For that you might need to refer to Leticia Baldridge.

447007, Caller Just Brought It Up on the LIMBOsevic Show
Posted by UTUSN on Wed Oct-01-03 12:53 PM

LIMBO's doing the victim thing, that they want to "humiliate" somebody by any means necessary. The caller is kissing him up, saying "it's all about politics." Meanwhile, brother David LIMBO is being slathered over by Wolf BLITZER on the "great debate" about how "Christians are being DISSED by the Elites." But back to LIMBO, he's into full self-pity as he often does, claiming EVERYBODY WAS JUST WAITING for him to inject politics into sports. Sez that SPORTS WRITERS are EVERY BIT AS POLITICAL as him. Sez that "they ARE DEMANDING MY HEAD ON A PLATE"-------well, alRIGHTY THEN, let's have it! "I've been facing this 15 years on my radio program. If you don't say what they want to hear, not only are they going to disagree with you, they are going to demand you be silenced. There are so many things been said about this episode that are so far from the truth that it's laughable."

447028, "Here's this LITTLE Donavan McNABB"
Posted by UTUSN on Wed Oct-01-03 12:55 PM

"I just said I'm a sports fan, I just don't think he's as good as his reputation. And I said that " ...the reputation was pumped up BECAUSE he's Black. "And they're trying to say I'm racist. I'll say it again today."

447110, Just heard this reported on AM Radio
Posted by Bandit on Wed Oct-01-03 01:04 PM

Said it was making quite a stir then they followed up by saying Rush says everyone is making a mountain out of a molehill. Well even a molehill is too much when it comes to racism. IMHO

447252, He's-----------WOUNDED!!!!!!!!!
Posted by UTUSN on Wed Oct-01-03 01:20 PM

He's been yammering on for more than 45 minutes. Now he's saying that it's the sports-writer ELITES tha have decided "to take issue and PUNISH" him. I didn't know "elites" extended even to SPORTS WRITERS, "political, established BY THE LEFT." Wow. We Libs are POWERFUL and as such, SCARY.
