1. IMHO, "W" "Chimpy" Bush is most like Jeff Davis than any other US "leader"

Traitorous, antihumanist and out of touch with reality.

2. From what I have heard, Jeff Davis was actually an honorable and

intelligent man who suffered greatly in his office as Pres of the Confederate States. The blivet**, on the other hand, is none of those things and we WISH he was in a different country.

Dang, too late to change my "YES" vote...But I doubt that
Mr. Davis would have allowed WATERGATE to happen.

His concern for his HONOR would have made him resign
amidst sincere apologies in 1972 or so.
And he would have PUBLICLY testified against the perpetrators,
and probably SHOT a few of them himself, on the White House lawn.
It was a SIMPLER time.

NIXON was worse than Jefferson Davis...

15. Jeff Davis also did not want to be

President of the Confederacy. In fact he was one of the few well known politicians who stayed away from Montgomery where the president was being chosen. This may have been one of the reasons he was picked, though the biggest reason was his three biggest competitors all came from Georgia so they split their support.

Anyway, while hotheads were trying to get the southern states to secede with Lincoln's election, Davis stayed on in Washington and served on the Senate Crittenden Committee which tried to reach a last minute compromise to attempt to keep the southern states in the Union. At that point only South Carolina had left. He stayed long past the point where anything could be accomplished, and then he went home, not to Montgomery where the new Confederate government was forming.

As a former Secretary of War, West Point graduate, and Mexican War veteran, he expected to win a field commission in the new nation's armed forces. He was not expecting to be chosen President.

What was he supposed to do?

He served as well as he could, made mistakes, and did his best. He fought for as long as he could.

When the war ended, he was captured, imprisoned and indicted for treason.

Feeling he was completely innocent of that charge, he hired a high powered group of northern abolitionist attorneys to defend him. The defense was that secession was indeed Constitutional and therefore he could not be a traitor. The government refused to give him a trial to defend himself. He just remained indicted and the tial was pushed back again and again.

Eventually, he was denied that trial, was released on bond paid for by Cornelius Vanderbilt and Horace Greeley of all people and just left indicted. Kind of like a Gitmo situation. We know you're guilty. We don't need no stinking trial.

And now we have people calling him a traitor as if he was tried and convicted when he was begging for a trial to prove his innocence and was denied it. Amazing.

20. A lot of the errors about Jeff Davis reflect bad textbooks and biased

teachers. He's more respected in the southern states, but even growing up in Texas I didn't really hear much of the truth until I read it myself as an adult. At least the truth has been preserved - in older days the history was not only written by the winning side, all other information because harder and harder to find. Richard III comes to mind - nothing like Shakespeare's play, according to other sources. I'm thinking of that great mystery/history lesson, "The Daughter Of Time." A great book.

19. Don't worry about your "yes" vote - as I read it, it didn't make any

judgement at all on Jefferson Davis - it's only about the people AFTER his time. There have been other horribly corrupt administrations, but no other that I know combines the corruption, the violence, the hypocrisy, and the sheer magnitude of damage to the world as the illegitimate coups of the neocons.

13. What's with the going after Hoover and Davis

two of the most honest, incorruptible, honorable men in our nation's history.

When Hoover took office many parts of the nation's economy were already deep in depression. The stock market crash occurred when he was in office less than a year.

His Reconstruction Finance Corp. pushed the government further into the nation's economic sphere than any president before him would have dreamt of going.

FDR went much, much further, which makes Hoover's eforts look paltry in comparison, but if you compare him with those who went before him, he went very far.

Not a reasonable person to compare to Bush in my opinion.

25. I'm not a confederate sympathiser...

but I can say this for J Davis. He wasn't corrupt. He was on the wrong side, but a man of integrity none the less. Another thing, can you imagine any congressperson giving up their seat to fight in Iraq?
Davis did as much when he formed a group of volunteers to fight in the Mexican War. Like someone else said - those were different times. Those were the early days of the Republic, we are now in the times of Imperial America, and have been since shortly after WWI would be my guess.

(edited to add: some would argue Imperial America began with the end of the Civil War - but I leave that for another post.)

call him that) that we've ever had, without exception in all our history. I never thought I'd see anybody in the White House who could make Ronald Ray Guns and Tricky Dicky Nixon look like saints by comparison.
