2. I think maybe
weather underground shows space satellite views. I live on the gulf coast and I access that a lot and also noaa and weather.com. After you look at the space pix, read the discussions.

I know absolutely nothing about rivers and such, and don't even know what that study is called... geography? hydrology?

But I know if you pray to anyone or believe in sending good thoughts, white light, or even crossing your fingers, now is the time to do it for the folks in N. O. They are looked a loaded shotgun down the barrel.

As for it changing the river: If it hits just right it could. There is a small chance that it could hit just right, only time will tell. For sure, the Army Corps of Engineers has been aware of that possibility. The Corps has done everything they could feasibly do to keep it from happeneing up til now. A catastrophe such as a perfect hit could forever alter the landscape.

Visible satellite image:
3 Day watches and warnings: here.
Strike Probabilities: here.

As to changing the course of the mighty miss, Unlikely that it changes through the city, but it could bypass the city altogether. The Mississippi river changes course all the time. We'll only know after the flooding receedes in a week or two.
