Straw poll on the Dem candidates in our Political Science Department

www.winningpolitics.com (Just the site of the school, this was just something we did over a two day period with the Dems in the department)

We did a similar straw poll in July with 24 of the resident Dem students. The results of that poll were as follows:

Dean: 15
Kerry: 4
Edwards: 3
Kucinich: 1
Gore: 1 (They wrote it in)

We just completed a new straw poll, with 36 Dems (More people during the Fall). Here are the results:

Clark: 19
Dean: 11
Kerry: 3
Edwards: 1
Kucinich: 1
Lieberman: 1

We asked those who had voted in the first straw poll to write in who they voted for then.

9 of the 15 Dean supporters had switched to Clark.



Just a little something to think about from Ohio.

not yet reflected in national polls or even state polls that high quantities of Dean people have switched to Clark. Seems on the whole Dean's supporters are stable and if anything Clark has gained among previously undecided democrats or those supporting Lieberman.

2. Here's my take

I think a lot of Dean people (I was one, I like Dean) simply see Clark as a better candidate to embaress Bush with. Also, I think Dean is still picking up undecideds. As did Clark.

One thing to keep in mind, we're all pragmatic partisans, mostly because we study politics.

3. This is in Ohio?

If so, how is it that Kucinich got only one vote? That is surprising...a recent poll showed him pulling a strong third there. But I guess your sample is too small to be representative of the state, and I am guessing your school is not in his district.

Anyways, thanks for posting this. While the sample is probably too small to be reflective of any particular group, it is interesting, and I am worried by how many Dean supporters switched to Clark. I know some people who were supporting Dean but waiting for Clark to get in, so that could account for some of it, and hopefully the others will come back.
