After Andrew, my active duty MP unit from Ft Belvoir was deployed
there for several months.

I was stationed in in 93, and came to be stationed at Belvoir in March of that year. At that time, the unit I was assigned to was still in Homestead, and as I remember they didn't get back until June or so. Almost a year deployment.

This was an active duty unit, not reserve.

With our active, reserve, AND national guard units in Iraq, how the hell will the armed services handle a deployment that will be needed to overcome a storm that will probably be worse than Andrew, with it being so much larger, and moving slower.

Keeping us safe at home, my ass.

2. If Andrew was bad enough to deploy an active unit for so long
I hate to imagine how bad this will be.

:(

5. They said there were 1500 national guard troops ready
immediately, but what about the long run.

Poor folks.

3. That, I can, and do support
A deployment of soldiers to keep America safe.

The present day use of our soldiers in Iraq does nothing to keep us safe. Nor the expenditure of the $200 billion. Thanks for you service.

6. That is really what the National Guard is for.
helping during natural disasters, forest fires or other emergencies here at home.

8. Yes, and they were used in New York and in the airports after 9-11
Sounds like a good place for the National Guard, guarding the "homeland".

9. Bush should rename them "the International Guard" ...
... if he's going to insist on sending them out of the country.

7. I was in Iraq the first time around
We were not there for long. There was a lot more reason back then than now.

I supported going after Al Queda, and Bin Laden. But, now we see Saddam is behind bars, and Bin Laden frequently in front of a camera. It irks me that the guy behind the death of 3000 of our people seems to be getting a free pass just so Bush can have an enemy to blame an illegal war on.
